FULLERTON : After 5 Hours, Man Surrenders to Police

A Fullerton man who allegedly shot an acquaintance and then barricaded himself in a small meat market for more than five hours Sunday finally surrendered to officers, police said Monday.

Tung Thanh Tran, 24, walked out of Gonzalez Market at 1311 S. Gilbert St. at 11:52 p.m. and was immediately arrested by Fullerton police officers, said Sgt. Glenn Deveney. He was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault in the shooting of Quoi Phu Huynh, 25, who was visiting from out of state, Deveney said.

Tran and Huynh had been drinking earlier in the day with three other friends in Tran’s apartment in a large complex at 1401 S. Gilbert St. An argument among the men apparently escalated into gunfire at 6:42 p.m., Deveney said.

“I think the whole thing started in one of the apartments,” Deveney said. “All of a sudden our switchboards lit up with numerous complaints of shots fired.”

The wounded Huynh ran and collapsed in a courtyard in a neighboring apartment complex, Deveney said. He was later in fair condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

Tran apparently left the apartment, hid in a back yard briefly and then jumped a fence and walked--shirtless and barefoot--into the small meat market and began playing video games, witnesses said. When four police squad cars arrived, the market owner managed to evacuate the seven customers and employees inside without incident, but had to wait more than five hours for Tran to give up, Deveney said.

“We originally thought there were two suspects in the market, but apparently the other man left with the rest of the evacuees,” Deveney said. “What his intent was in entering the market, I don’t know.”
