Rick Mirer threw his first pass as a Seahawk on Monday, 18 days after Seattle’s top draft pick was supposed to have been in training camp.

“I’ll be cross-eyed from watching so much film to catch up,” he said after the team’s morning workout.

On Sunday, the Seahawks announced a multiyear deal with the former Notre Dame quarterback, the second choice in the April draft behind Washington State’s Drew Bledsoe, who signed with New England.

Neither Mirer nor the Seahawks would discuss contract terms, but The Seattle Times reported Monday that, although Mirer has signed, clauses were still being worked out. Negotiations reportedly have centered on two proposals, a three-year deal that would pay Mirer about $8 million and a five-year deal worth more than $12 million, the newspaper said.

Seattle Coach Tom Flores said he doubts Mirer will be ready for Saturday’s exhibition opener against Indianapolis in the Kingdome.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed offensive lineman Lester Holmes, a first-round draft pick from Jackson State, to a three-year deal worth $2.5 million, according to Holmes’ agent.

Holmes was the 19th pick overall.

Coach Rich Kotite said in April that Holmes would be the Eagles’ starting right guard, playing alongside tackle Antone Davis.

The only American Indian in the U.S. Senate has introduced a bill that would prohibit the Washington Redskins from building their new stadium unless owner Jack Kent Cooke agrees to change the team’s name.

“The name ‘Redskins’ is highly offensive to native Americans because it conjures up bad stereotypical images of Indians,” said Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, D-Colo.

“Since Mr. Cooke has steadfastly refused to change the name of the team and he wants to build his new stadium on federally controlled land, we want to have some say as to what conditions will be imposed on its tenants.”

Cooke is negotiating to build a $205-million, 78,600-seat stadium on what is now a federally owned parking lot next to RFK Stadium.

Detroit Lion Coach Wayne Fontes, eager to avoid a quarterback controversy, says he will announce his starter after Sunday’s exhibition against Dallas in London.

Rodney Peete, the No. 1 quarterback in camp, is competing with Erik Kramer, Andre Ware and Chuck Long.
