Raiders’ Long to End Holdout

Raider defensive lineman Howie Long will end his holdout and report to training camp in Oxnard, probably today.

Long, 33 and a 12-year veteran, has been trying to renegotiate his contract after seeing the huge amounts received by other linemen in free agency.

He is going into the sixth year of a nine-year deal that paid him $1.4 million last season. Long was scheduled to receive $1.5 million this year and $1.65 million, $1.8 million and $1.98 million in the remaining years of the contract.

Although the Raiders have refused to increase the total worth of the contract, Long will get a small adjustment that will give him more of the money now.

Long was being fined $4,000 per day for sitting out, bringing the total to date to $84,000. He would like to see that fine dropped as part of the settlement.

“Howie is anxious to get to camp,” said his agent, Leigh Steinberg, “and see a resolution to this matter very soon.”
