AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Rhodes Helps Extend Orioles’ Win Streak

Arthur Rhodes gave up three hits in eight-plus innings and Mark Parent hit his second home run as the Baltimore Orioles extended their winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers Monday night at Detroit.

The Orioles moved into sole possession of second place in the AL East, a half-game behind the idle Toronto Blue Jays. The streak is the Orioles’ longest since winning 10 in a row June 2-12, a stretch that ties Boston for the longest in the league this season.

Rhodes (3-2), in his second start since being recalled from triple-A Rochester on July 31, gave up one run, struck out eight and walked three. After Rhodes walked Travis Fryman to open the ninth, Alan Mills relieved and gave up a run-scoring fielder’s choice grounder by Lou Whitaker.

Parent, who has 16 at-bats this season, homered against Mike Moore (8-6) during the sixth. Parent hit his first homer of the season in Sunday’s 7-6 victory over Cleveland.

Chicago 5, Oakland 4--Frank Thomas had three hits, including a tie-breaking home run in the seventh to give the White Sox the victory at Chicago.

The White Sox, first in the AL West, had lost four of their last five after winning seven of eight.

Alex Fernandez (13-6) gave up four runs and 10 hits in seven innings to earn his first win since July 20. He walked two and struck out three.

Roberto Hernandez retired the final four for his 24th save in 28 opportunities.

Thomas hit his 29th homer with one out in the seventh after Oakland had tied the score, 4-4.

Kansas City 7, Seattle 6--Jose Lind had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the eighth inning as the Royals rallied for the victory at Kansas City.

The Royals pulled to within 6-5 on Gary Gaetti’s run-scoring double against Ted Power (0-3). After Kevin McReynolds struck out, Greg Gagne was intentionally walked. Lind followed with a single to right.
