Islanders’ Mullen Hospitalized After Mild Stroke

Forward Brian Mullen of the New York Islanders suffered a mild stroke and has been hospitalized, the team said.

Mullen, who was stricken on Wednesday, will remain hospitalized in New York for tests and observation.

His goal in double overtime of Game 2 in the Patrick Division semifinals helped the Islanders beat the Washington Capitals, 5-4. The Islanders went on to win the series, 4-2. They followed that by eliminating the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the next round before losing to Montreal. In the regular season, Mullen had 18 goals and 14 assists in 81 games.

The San Antonio Spurs on Friday announced the signing of veteran guard Eric (Sleepy) Floyd, who was waived by the Houston Rockets nearly two weeks ago.

Free-agent center Joe Kleine has agreed to a multiyear contract with the Phoenix Suns, the NBA team announced. Terms were not disclosed.

Cory Reader, a 7-foot, 280-pound center from Brisbane, Australia, will be allowed to play basketball for Brigham Young.

The NCAA’s Appeals Committee granted Reader two years of eligibility to play for the Cougars, ending months of scrutiny by the NCAA staff brought about because Reader played in a professional league in Australia.

Ken Schrader, the season’s top qualifier in NASCAR’s Winston Cup series, broke the Michigan International Speedway stock car record in taking the pole for Sunday’s Champion Spark Plug 400 at Brooklyn, Mich.

The previous mark of 178.196 m.p.h. was set last August by the late Alan Kulwicki. Schrader’s fast lap of 180.750 was one of 12 that bettered the record.

Andy Hampsten of Boulder, Colo., won the Tour of Galicia at El Ferrol, Spain, finishing 1 minute 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Stefano Della Santa of Italy.

Australia’s Phil Anderson, who held the yellow jersey from opening day, won the Tour of Britain for the second time in three years.

Field Hockey

A foul call by a field hockey referee at Dhaka, Bangladesh, touched off an hourlong melee in which players battled with their sticks and fans pelted each other with stones.

Police fired tear gas to quell the brawl, which injured six players and at least 24 spectators at the Dhaka Hockey Stadium during the final of a league tournament.

About 10,000 attended the match between Abahani Club and Mohammedan Sporting.

Miscellany

Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes led the top eight-seeded teams into the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Miller Lite Open at Seal Beach.

No. 1 Kiraly and Steffes scored seven of the final eight points in a 15-7 victory over 17th-seeded Andrew Smith and Wes Welch in a second-round match. Kiraly and Steffes advance to today’s quarterfinals against eighth-seeded Eric Fonoimoana and Tim Hovland.
