Lin, Weiner Win Boys’ 18 Doubles Title

A day after being upset in the singles division, Anaheim’s Eric Lin and Cypress’ Glenn Weiner won the U.S. Tennis Assn. National boys’ 18 doubles tennis championship Friday at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College.

Lin and Weiner, the top-seeded team, defeated Cerritos’ Ryan Juinio and Mike Mackay of Phoenix, Ariz., 6-4, 7-5.

The winners have been playing partners since they were 10 years old.

Weiner was top seeded in singles and Lin was seeded sixth.

Fountain Valley rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Hoosier North of Indiana, 6-5, in the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind.

Craig Ritter drove in the tying and go-ahead run in the sixth for Fountain Valley, which is 2-0 in round-robin play. Chris Ponchak had two hits and drove in a run and pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs, for the victory.

Fountain Valley, which has already qualified for medal play, plays Maui of Hawaii in its final round-robin game today.

The Orange County Batbusters and Gordon’s Panthers of Cypress each reached the quarterfinals of the Amateur Softball Assn. Junior Olympic girls’ 18-and-under national champion in Visalia.

The Batbusters beat the Northern California Tremors, 2-0, and the Panthers won, 11-1, over Southern California Athletics. The Batbusters play Kansas City Blazers and the Panthers take on the Tulsa Eagles. Both games are at 1 p.m. The championship game of the double-elimination tournament is Sunday at 2 p.m.

San Clemente defeated Concord, Calif., 11-7, to advance to the finals of the 15-and-under National Junior Olympics water polo competition at De Anza College in Cupertino.

Jim Farley scored five goals and Johnathon Hewko scored four for San Clemente, which will play SoCal of Tustin in the championship at 11 a.m. today.

SET, the 13-and-under team made up of players from the Saddleback/El Toro area, advanced to the final with a 9-6 victory over Costa Mesa.
