PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Is Expected to Be at Practice Today

As suspected, Raider Coach Art Shell has diabetes.

That diagnosis was made by Dr. Stephen Corday after two days of tests.

Shell, who was hospitalized Monday night, checked out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday and is expected to be at the team’s morning practice today.

“He has adult diabetes,” said Corday of Shell. “But he does not need insulin. If he takes his medication and sticks to his diet and changes his lifestyle and loses weight, his abnormality will dramatically improve.

“He left the hospital with a full energy level and should have no problems in the near future.”

While Shell was leaving the hospital, the Raiders were checking out of their Oxnard camp after nearly six weeks of training for some players.

When the team returns from Friday’s exhibition game against the Indianapolis Colts, it will settle into its permanent headquarters in El Segundo for the rest of the season.

Veteran guard Max Montoya, who has seen all kinds of training camps in his 15 years in the NFL, thought this one was tough.

“Oh yeah, compared to the others (with the Raiders),” he said. “They wanted to step things up after a 7-9 season. There was harder hitting, more conditioning, more two-a-days, more attention to detail. You name it, it was there.

“And the guys responded, young and old. It was good.”

Offensive lineman Steve Wright, who re-injured his left shoulder Tuesday, is contemplating surgery. He plans to consult further with doctors before making a decision that could cost him this season.

“I first dislocated it last season,” he said. “But I was rehabilitating it five to six days a week starting last February.

“But then (Tuesday), I was just pass blocking and it slid out. I have played with a lot of pain, but that was the wildest pain I’ve ever felt. You just want somebody to hit you over the head with a 2 x 4 to end it.”
