A fire believed to be ignited by a transient’s cooking fire burned 81 acres of brush in the Simi Valley hills Tuesday afternoon before firefighters were able to contain it, authorities said.

The fire broke out just before 1 p.m. near Sycamore Drive and Alamo Street, not far from Simi Valley Hospital, said Pam Sears of the Ventura County Fire Department. No structures were threatened.

Although investigators determined that the fire started in a transient’s campsite, no suspect has been identified, she said.

As many as 100 firefighters battled the brush fire before containing it at 3:30 p.m., Sears said. Some crews will remain at the site until the hot spots have been extinguished.

Sears said firefighters were aided by light breezes, which averaged 2 to 5 m.p.h.
