COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Muscle Pull Could Sideline Adams

Share

Wide receiver Bryan Adams had been held out of a scrimmage the day before to rest a tender hamstring, but it turned out Thursday that perhaps the rest wasn’t long enough. In a dummy offensive series, Adams hauled in long pass from Ryan Fien, then pulled up lame in the end zone.

He immediately headed for the sideline, where a muscle pull was determined, and he joins the list of those who probably will sit out the opener against California on Sept. 4 at the Rose Bowl.

“It begins to look like we’ll have to rest him three or four weeks to get him right,” Coach Terry Donahue said. “I won’t say he’s definitely out, but it looks probable.”

Adams, a junior who claims 4.35-second speed in the 40-yard dash, was held out all last season because of an ankle injury. He had played his way back to the top of the depth chart in practice and was high in the running to return punts.

His injury opens the door for Kevin Jordan or Mike Nguyen to start at wide receiver and, perhaps, freshman Andy Colbert to return punts.

Others who definitely will miss the Cal game are running back Sharmon Shah, who is still recovering from a knee injury suffered before practice opened, and reserve tackle Paul Kennedy, who suffered a leg injury in Wednesday’s scrimmage. He will be sidelined about four weeks, better than expected because it was initially thought he had broken the leg.

Still in doubt is tight end Brian Allen, who has sat out two-a-days because of a knee problem.
