Berganio Advances but Gore Beaten in U.S. Amateur Golf

David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar defeated Tom McKnight of Galax, Va., 3 and 2, in the first round of match play Thursday in the 93rd U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at Cypress Creek Course at Champions Golf Club in Houston.

Today, Berganio will face Bob Clark of Murrieta, Calif. Clark defeated Larry Barber of Sherman, Tex., 2 up.

Jason Gore of Valencia earned a berth in the match-play field in a sudden-death playoff Thursday morning, but was knocked off in the first round by veteran amateur Jay Sigel of Berwyn, Pa., 3 and 2. Sigel is a former U.S. Amateur champion.

Dave Phillips of Simi Valley fired rounds of 78 and 77 to win the Ventura City Junior Golf Championship at Olivas Park Golf Course.

The Ventura County Junior Championship is scheduled for Monday at Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club in Camarillo and Tuesday at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

Ben Cherney of Encino and Ross Fulgentis of Westlake Village finished with a bang in the final round of the American Junior Golf Assn. tournament at Brentwood Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.

Cheney shot a one-under 70 to finish with a 54-hole total of 223 and Fulgentis shot 71 to finish at 218, six shots back.

Basketball

The second Ventura College/Cedric Ceballos auction and alumni game will get under way tonight at 6 with a $50-per-plate dinner and sports auction at the Ventura Doubletree Hotel. The game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the college.

The events will benefit the school’s basketball program and the Boys and Girls Club of Ventura.

Ceballos is a former Ventura College standout now with the Phoenix Suns.

Ventura Coach Philip Mathews said more than 50 items will be auctioned, including autographed game jerseys from Michael Jordan and NFL stars Warren Moon and Ronnie Lott.
