OUTLOOK

Kilpatrick, a Los Angeles County youth correctional facility in the Malibu foothills, is starting once again without benefit of a single returning player. Because the maximum stay at Kilpatrick is one year, it is impossible to build a program and plan for the future. But, Bell and his coaching staff love the challenge. “We take an unknown quantity and make something out of it,” Bell said. The 1993 unknown quantity amounts to just three players with high school experience.

The defending Division IX Champion Mounties outscored opponents, 501-83, last year and are 21-1 over the past two seasons.

OUTLOOK

The Mounties lost Eliel Swinton, the section’s third leading all-time rusher, to graduation, leaving Smith to fill the void. John Hazelton, an assistant coach, said Smith is up for the challenge. As a fullback, Smith gained more than 1,200 yards last season and averaged nearly 10 yards a carry. Many observers have told Hazelton that Smith is a better back than Swinton. Hazelton concurs. “Bold prediction: (Smith) will gain over 2,000 yards,” he said. And the Mounties will surely prosper--again.
