SANTA PAULA : 150 Firefighters Halt 18-Acre Canyon Blaze

Share

Firefighters spent most of Tuesday battling a brush fire that blackened 18 acres of a rugged canyon near Santa Paula before it was brought under control, authorities said.

Smoke from the fire was first spotted at 10:46 a.m. in Timber Canyon near Steckel Park along California 150. The fire was fully contained by 4:17 p.m.

Dispatching Supervisor Vicki Crabtree said the fire was difficult to fight because of the steep terrain and thick brush in the canyon.

Most of the work was done by four hand crews from the California Department of Forestry, a county fire hand crew and three helicopters. About 150 firefighters were involved in the operation, she said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.
