COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Passers Stun El Camino

Steve Walker completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Bustos late in the first half to help Golden West upset El Camino, 30-23, in a nonconference football game Friday at OCC.

The touchdown play gave the Rustlers (1-0) a 17-13 lead with one minute 28 seconds to play in the half. Walker, who split time with Bob Ioja, was five of 10 for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

El Camino came into the game as the No. 19-ranked team in the nation in the J.C. Grid-Wire poll. Golden West was unranked.

Golden West was able to control the game on the ground, thanks largely to running backs Vance Senteno and Eddie Benson, who alternated on every play. Senteno had 91 yards rushing and scored a touchdown. Benson rushed for 86 yards and also scored once.

Golden West rushed for 217 yards and held El Camino to 88 yards.

Senteno scored on a 10-yard run midway in the third quarter as Golden West went ahead, 23-14.

Walker then completed an eight-yard scoring pass to Robert Fiesler early in the fourth quarter to put the Rustlers ahead, 30-14.

El Camino had a safety and a touchdown in the final three minutes to get close.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Mt. San Antonio 0--Alan Buehler, who was assisted by Joe Bahash, scored the game’s only goal. Goalie Hans Gratzer had nine saves for Golden West (2-0).

Irvine Valley 5, Long Beach 0--Nigerian transfer student Thomas Okokhere led Irvine Valley College with two goals in the season opener. Steve Martin, Tony Guinane and George Larsen also had goals for Irvine Valley.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Bakersfield 2, Fullerton 1--Monica Esparza scored a goal, Fullerton’s (0-1-1) only score in the Hornets’ first match.

Cypress 2, Foothill College of San Francisco 0--Tracy Osman and Karen Morgan scored the goals for visiting Cypress (1-0).
