Sukova, Sanchez Vicario Combine to Upset Fernandez and Zvereva
So it wasn’t a total loss for Helena Sukova after all.
Sukova, swept by Steffi Graf in the women’s singles final earlier Saturday, teamed with Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to upset the top-seeded team of Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the women’s doubles semifinals under the lights.
Fernandez and Zvereva were attempting to win the Grand Slam in women’s doubles, but instead saw the No. 3-seeded team of Sukova and Sanchez Vicario end their quest to win all four of the major doubles events of the year.
It was also the first Grand Slam doubles defeat for Fernandez and Zvereva in 41 matches.
The last women’s doubles partners to win the Grand Slam were Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver in 1984.
