Retro : Familiar Faces : PBS REPEATS ‘I’LL FLY AWAY’ AND DEBUTS A FILM CONCLUSION; USA NETWORK ADOPTS ‘THE ODD COUPLE’

It’s an exciting fall Retro season. PBS is airing the Emmy Award-winning series “I’ll Fly Away.” The legendary “The Bob Newhart Show” is joining Nick at Nite’s lineup. And USA is dusting off the classic “The Odd Couple” sitcom. But that’s not all, folks! Below, an overview of what’s new in old series for the fall.

BROADCAST: PBS

“I’ll Fly Away”: PBS is airing all 39 episodes of the 1991-93 NBC series set in the pre-Civil Rights South and starring Sam Waterston and Regina Taylor. PBS also will present a new 90-minute movie that will conclude the series. Mondays at 7 p.m. KVCR; 8 p.m. KCET and KPBS. Oct 11.

LOCAL: KTLA

“Family Matters”: The popular ABC sitcom makes its syndication bow. Jaleel White stars. Weekdays at 6:30 and 7 p.m. Sept. 20. (Also weekdays at 2 and 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. on KUSI).

KCAL

“Empty Nest”: Repeats of the long-running NBC sitcom about a Miami pediatrician and his two grown daughters. Richard Mulligan, Dinah Manoff, Kristy McNichol and Bear star. Weekdays at 6 p.m. (Also weekdays at 3:30 p.m. on KNSD).

KTTV

“Cops”: Repeats of Fox’s award-winning reality-based series. Weeknights at 6:30 p.m. Monday. (Also weekdays at 4 p.m. on KFMB).

CABLE: A&E;

“Agatha Christie Mysteries: Poirot”: Repeats of the popular PBS “Mystery!” series featuring Christie’s brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. David Suchet stars. Sundays at 7 and 11 p.m. Already premiered.

“Inspector Morse”: John Thaw stars as the enigmatic Oxfordshire detective in episodes of this British series that aired on “Mystery!” Tuesdays at 6 and 10 p.m. Tuesday.

BET

“Out All Night”: The cable channel airs episodes of the 1992 NBC sitcom about a former singing star (Patti LaBelle), now owner of a Los Angeles nightclub, who takes two college graduates (Morris Chestnut and Duane Martin) under her wing. Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 .

“What’s Happening”: Fred Berry and Shirley Hemphill star in this ‘70s sitcom about an inseparable trio of teen-agers. Weeknights at 7 p.m. Sept 20. Following at 7:30 p.m. is “What’s Happening Now,” a syndicated ‘80s spinoff of the original.

BRAVO

“Max Headroom”: The cable network’s “Too Good for TV” showcase presents the 1987-88 ABC satire starring Matt Frewer and Amanda Pays. January.

FAMILY CHANNEL

“Rescue 911”: William Shatner hosts repeats of CBS’ reality-based series featuring true-life heroics of police, paramedics and firefighters. Saturdays at 8 p.m. Already premiered.

“Punky Brewster”: Soleil Moon Frye and George Gaynes star in the ‘80s network and syndicated sitcom about a grouchy old man who decides to help an abandoned child. Fridays at 6 p.m.; Sundays at 8 p.m. Oct. 3.

LIFETIME

“Sisters”: Encore episodes of the NBC series about the lives of four sisters. Swoosie Kurtz, stars. January.

THE NASHVILLE NETWORK

“Hee Haw”: Repeats of the country comedy series that aired on CBS and in syndication for 25 years. Regulars include Roy Clark, Minnie Pearl and Grandpa Jones. Saturdays at 7 and 10 p.m. Oct. 2 .

NICKELODEON

“The Bob Newhart Show”: In the 1972-78 CBS sitcom, Newhart plays successful Chicago psychologist Bob Hartley and Suzanne Pleshette is his wife Emily. Bill Daily, Marcia Wallace, Peter Bonerz and Jack Riley also star. Monday-Thursday at 8 p.m.-5 a.m; Friday at 8 p.m.-6 a.m.; Saturday at 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; Sept. 19 at 8:30 p.m.-5:30 a.m.; beginning Sept. 20, “Newhart” will air weeknights at 9:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.; beginning Sept. 25, Saturdays at 3:30 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 p.m.

“Matlock”: The popular detective series, now in its eighth season on ABC, stars Andy Griffith as a wily Southern attorney. Weekdays at 8:05 a.m. Sept. 20.

USA

“Major Dad”: Gerald McRaney stars as Major John D. (Mac) MacGillis in this family sitcom, which aired on CBS from 1989 to 1993. Mondays-Thursdays at 11 p.m. Sept. 20.

“The Odd Couple”: Jack Klugman and Tony Randall star as mismatched roommates Oscar Madison and Felix Unger in the Emmy-winning sitcom, based on Neil Simon’s hit play and feature, which aired 1970-75 on ABC. Mondays-Thursdays at midnight. Monday.

“Wings”: Repeats of the NBC comedy about two brothers (Timothy Daly and Steven Weber) who operate a one-plane commuter service on Nantucket. Mondays-Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 20.

VH-1

“FM”: Robert Hays and “Home Improvement’s” Patricia Richardson star in this short-lived NBC 1989-90 comedy series set in a non-commercial radio station. Saturdays at 4:30 p.m.; Sundays at 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday.

“The New WKRP in Cincinnati”: The 1991-93 syndicated continuation of the classic CBS series “WKRP in Cincinnati.” Original stars Gordon Jump, Frank Bonner and Richard Sanders reprise their roles. Mondays-Thursdays at 4 and 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 4 p.m.; Sundays at 5 p.m. Already premiered.
