SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Narbonne High Gauchos overcame two deficits and perhaps doubt in themselves as they defeated Palisades, 20-13, in a City Section nonconference game Wednesday afternoon at Palisades.

Trailing, 13-12, in the fourth quarter, Narbonne running back Jamie Wilson broke two tackles on the left side of the Palisades’ line and sprinted 70 yards for the Gauchos’ winning touchdown. Wilson finished with a game-high 156 yards in 19 carries.

“He was hitting the hole a little slow in the third quarter so we took him out, and he didn’t like it much,” said first-year Narbonne Coach LeRoy Wilson, no relation to the player. “If that’s what it takes for him to score, we’ll do it again.”

The Gauchos are 3-42 in the past five years. Last week Narbonne (1-1) squandered a 15-point lead and lost to North Hollywood, 31-21.

Palisades, a 3-A Division playoff team in 1992, is 0-2.

“It’s a great victory this early in the season, we have almost as many victories as we did in the last three years,” Wilson said.

The Gauchos were 1-9 in 1992--the only victory against winless Jordan.

Narbonne took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Marcos Ramirez to running back Marcos Vann, but the Dolphins’ Lafayette May returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and 7-6 lead.

An eight-play, 65-yard drive in the third quarter gave Narbonne the lead. After seven consecutive rushes, Ramirez faked to Wilson and passed to tight end David Kator for a 24-yard touchdown and 12-7 lead.

Palisades quarterback Chris Kasteler, who sat out part of the game because of a bruised left shoulder, passed 15 yards to Mishani Scott for a touchdown and 13-12 lead.

Wilson then scored his winning touchdown.

Kator sealed the victory by intercepting a Kasteler pass with 32 seconds remaining, igniting a championship-like Gaucho celebration.

“We are tired of losing,” Kator said. “This team is coming together.”
