Running back Jerome Bettis practiced for the first time all week, but Cleveland Gary continued to remain on the sideline nursing a thigh bruise.

The Rams did not practice in pads, but Bettis took a full turn with the first-team offense and appeared recovered from a bruised sternum that had kept him inactive earlier in the week.

“If Cleveland Gary can’t start,” Coach Chuck Knox said, “Bettis will start.”

Wide receiver Sean LaChapelle, the Rams’ fifth-round draft choice, has participated in a total of seven plays during the team’s first two games.

“I had to go through it my freshman year at UCLA, too,” LaChapelle said.

“I learned from that experience so I know what my position is on this team. It’s not that I’m happy with it, but it’s the only thing I can do. I just have to learn and learn and learn.”
