San Clemente’s Newman Leads Rout of Santiago

San Clemente’s Dylan Newman scored four touchdowns, three on pass receptions, to lead the Tritons to a 35-0 victory over Santiago Friday night at San Clemente High.

San Clemente’s record improved to 3-0; Santiago is 0-3.

Newman, who caught five passes for 132 yards, had scoring receptions of 19, 17 and 52 yards. His other touchdown came on a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter.

San Clemente broke a scoreless tie with 2 minutes 45 seconds left in the second quarter when Allan Vaughan ran around the right side for a 28-yard touchdown.

Vaughan rushed for 154 yards in 17 carries and now has run for 524 yards and seven touchdowns in three games.

After a Santiago punt, San Clemente added another score just before halftime, when Geoff Buffum hit Newman for a 19-yard touchdown.

Buffum finished the game 6 of 13 for 163 yards. Cavalier quarterback Christian Cortez was 10 of 20 for 108 yards.

Newman caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and a 52-yarder in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Santiago had chances early in the game, twice driving deep into Triton territory in the first half. But both times the Cavaliers turned over the ball on downs, failing to convert on fourth and eight at the San Clemente 15 in the first quarter and on fourth and five at the San Clemente 12 in the second.
