PREP ROUNDUP : Irvine Swamps Los Alamitos in Water Polo

After a slow first quarter, Irvine scored six goals the second and third quarter added two more in the fourth to defeat Los Alamitos, 9-6, at the South Coast water polo tournament Friday at Heritage Park in Irvine, advancing to the semifinals.

Jason Lezak led the Vaqueros with three goals and goalkeeper Kevin Prect had several key fourth-quarter saves.

Junior Eric Ploessel of Los Alamitos, who had six goals in a second-round victory over Long Beach Poly, scored the 100th goal of his high school career. He had four goals against Irvine. Irvine is 6-4. Los Alamitos drops to 4-5.

In other third-round games of the South Coast tournament:

Corona del Mar 6, San Clemente 5--Neil Hueston scored the winning goal with 14 seconds left to play to advance No. 1-seeded Corona del Mar to the semifinals.

Santa Barbara 6, Marina 5--Scoring twice in the fourth quarter to take the lead, Santa Barbara was able to capitalize on Marina’s inability to score in the final quarter. Tim Devries had three goals for Marina (5-4).

Tustin 6, El Cajon Granite Hills 3--Tyler Sundberg had eight saves and scored a goal for Tustin (7-4). In a second-round game, Tustin defeated University, 4-2.

Edison 10, Sonora 4--Cory Tague scored six goals to lead Edison (7-3). He has scored 12 goals in three tournament games.

In nonleague water polo:

Canyon 12, Valencia 5--Senior Aaron Harries had five goals for Canyon (8-3). Goalkeeper Connor Mann had 12 saves for the Comanches. Jeff Ma scored three goals for Valencia.

In nonleague tennis:

Capistrano Valley 10, Laguna Hills 8--Tia West and Des Herzer swept at doubles for visiting Capistrano Valley 7-5, 6-1, 6-1. Capistrano Valley is (2-3).
