Calvary Chapel Streaks Past Laguna Beach
Calvary Chapel’s Waylan Kruse led his team to a 35-17 victory over Laguna Beach in the Artists’ home opener by passing for 211 yards for two touchdowns and rushing for two more Friday night.
Laguna Beach (1-3) scored first after Nate Pivaroff recovered a fumble on the Eagles’ 28-yard line. Pat Wood scored a four-yard run in the first quarter.
The Eagles came right back when Kruse’s favorite receiver Aaron Fountain caught a 50-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 left in first quarter.
The Eagles defense took control after that, pressuring Wood on every play. Steve LeFevre led the defense with three sacks.
Calvary Chapel led off the second quarter with a fumble recovery by Darrin Robertson on the Laguna Beach 17. Kruse ran it in from the 11 with 8:48 to give the Eagles a seven-point lead. Kruse then completed a 10-yard pass to Mark Echan, who fumbled. But Joe Jones made the recovery in the end zone for the Calvary Chapel touchdown and a 21-7 halftime lead.
Laguna Beach scored 10 points in the third quarter on Liam McDonagh’s three-yard run and Brad Bohn’s 25-yard field goal.
The Eagles scored twice in the fourth quarter following a 50-yard kick return by Echan. Kruse scored on a one-yard run with 1:29 left and a 14-yard run by Robert Hudson.
