HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : No. 1 Harvard-Westlake Claws Back in Volleyball Behind Powers, Selby

Lindsay Powers had 35 assists and Amanda Selby made 12 blocks to lead Harvard-Westlake High to an 11-15, 15-10, 15-3, 15-9 nonleague volleyball victory against Marymount on Thursday night at Marymount.

The Wolverines, ranked No. 1 in Division II in the Southern Section, had lost 12 consecutive non-tournament matches against the Sailors, who are ranked 10th in Division I.

Lesley Coben added 13 kills and Hillary Gross had 12 digs for Harvard-Westlake (7-0).

In other girls’ volleyball matches:

Westlake d. Royal, 15-10, 9-15, 15-4, 3-15, 15-7--Shanon Sincock had 13 kills for Westlake (7-5, 4-2) in the Marmonte League match at Westlake.

Jenny Treglown had seven kills and 11 blocks for Royal (4-2 in league play).

Buena d. Oxnard, 15-10, 15-10, 15-7--Jennifer Pappas had 11 kills and seven solo blocks to lead Buena in the Channel League match at Ventura.

Rene Goth added 11 kills for the Bulldogs (4-2, 4-2).

Poly d. Monroe, 11-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-3--Gisela Dagnino had a school-record 28 kills to help rally the Parrots back from 0-2 in games.

Donna Farraj had 17 kills and Iaisha Flores 10 for Poly.

Xothilt Ordonez led Poly with 49 assists. Poly and Monroe are tied at 2-1 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference.

L.A. Baptist d. Marshall Fundamental, 15-1, 15-4, 15-2--Darcie Frazier and Lori Neville had five kills apiece to lead the Knights, ranked seventh in Division V in the Southern Section, in an Alpha League match at L.A. Baptist.

Tunde Hrotko had 13 assists for the Knights (4-4, 1-1).

Village Christian d. Western Christian, 15-0, 15-5, 15-1--Amber Hansen had 15 assists and eight aces to lead the visiting Crusaders (4-3, 2-0) to an Alpha League victory.

Chaminade d. Notre Dame, 15-13, 15-3, 15-13--Katy Bloodgood had 25 assists for the Eagles (6-3, 4-1) in a Mission League match at Notre Dame.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Thousand Oaks 15, Simi Valley 45; Thousand Oaks 15, Royal 49; Simi Valley 16, Royal 43--Sophomore Todd Disney led a first- to sixth-place finish by the Lancers in the Marmonte League meet at Cal Lutheran.

Disney ran 16 minutes 43 seconds over the three-mile course. The Lancers’ other scoring runners were Keith O’Doherty (16:44), Chadd Aldrich (16:44), Jeff Fischer (16:45) and Kevin Marsden (16:45).

Thousand Oaks, the No. 4-ranked team in the nation, is undefeated in five meets.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Simi Valley 19, Thousand Oaks 38; Simi Valley 20, Royal 38; Thousand Oaks 27, Royal 28--Sophomore Kristin Hawking led Simi Valley in the Marmonte League meet at Cal Lutheran.

Hawking, winner of the girls’ 1,600 meters for Sequoia Junior High in the Southern Section Division IV track championships in May, ran 19:01 over the three-mile course as the Pioneers (2-0, 2-0) placed five runners among the first nine finishers.

Thousand Oaks sophomore Kim Mortensen, who finished eighth in last year’s Southern Section Division I cross-country championships, dropped out of the race at the 1 1/4-mile mark after twisting her right ankle.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth 5, El Camino Real 2--Chatsworth’s Lilian Ore, Lindsay Wasserman, Marit Krain and Rebecca Grable swept the singles round in a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Notre Dame 15, Bishop Montgomery 3--Lily Parades, Mercedes Cornejo and Allison Ahart won six of nine singles sets to lead the Knights (6-3, 1-1) to a Mission League victory.

Bishop Montgomery is 1-1 in the league.
