Lori Talley, a former Times All-Valley girls’ basketball player from Bell-Jeff High, was one of four freshmen Cal Poly Pomona basketball players injured in an automobile accident Monday night near the university, the school announced Tuesday.

Talley, Michaela Ross of Newport Beach and twins Tiffany and Taffany Maxwell of Long Beach were injured when the car Talley was driving hit a curb and crashed into a tree on Valley Blvd., south of Temple Ave., near the University’s student housing.

There were no other cars involved and the students were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital.

Talley sustained the least serious injuries, suffering a severely sprained wrist, a severely sprained right arm and cuts from the windshield. She was released Monday evening.

“The car just jerked and I lost control,” Talley said. “That’s all I remember.”

Ross, who was riding in the front passenger seat, had the most serious injuries. She was knocked unconscious on impact, suffering a partially collapsed lung, fractured pelvis, fractured lower vertebrae, broken right wrist and right thumb, dislocated and broken right ankle and dislocated and broken toes. Ross will also need plastic surgery to repair cuts around her eye.

Ross was scheduled to be transferred from Pomona Valley Hospital to Hoag Presbyterian Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach for orthopedic surgery.

Tiffany Maxwell also was knocked unconscious. She had her arm shattered in six different places and suffered a severe cut on her leg requiring 40 stitches. Taffany fractured a bone below the left eye. The Maxwell sisters will be moved to the the Family Health Plan facility in Cerritos.

Pomona Police declined to comment, but University officials said there was no alcohol involved. Police said that it appeared that all the passengers were wearing seat belts.

In a statement, Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball Coach Darlene May said: “The focus of our program right now is the health of these four young ladies. This is a devastating thing for anyone to go through, especially four 18-year-old women. We are thankful that nobody lost their life and our prayers are toward a speedy recovery.”

Talley, a 6-foot-1 guard, averaged 19.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and eight assists a game last season, earning Division IV all-state honors. She is expected to be able to play this season.
