One week after struggling against Kansas State, No. 5 Nebraska returned to peak form by defeating Missouri, 49-7, Saturday.

“Now, that’s a little more like it,” Coach Tom Osborne said after Calvin Jones ran for two touchdowns and caught one of Tommie Frazier’s two touchdown passes to lead the Cornhuskers.

“We probably played our most complete game of the year,” Osborne said. “That was something we were concerned about. I thought the defense played a great ballgame. Offensively we were quite consistent. I was pleased to see us come together and play as well as we did.”

Jones scored on runs of four and one yards as he gained 129 yards in 27 carries for the Cornhuskers, 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Eight. Missouri (2-4-1, 1-2) lost to Nebraska for the 15th consecutive time.

Frazier passed seven yards to Clester Johnson for one touchdown and in the final minute of the first half he threw a swing pass to Jones, who took it in on a play that covered 55 yards.

“The drive right before the half was a big one,” Osborne said. “It was a difficult catch. It was out in front of him, but he caught it and made a great run. I thought it was a big play.”

Frazier, who completed eight of 13 passes for 143 yards, also ran for 81 yards in 11 carries and scored on a 37-yard run early in the second half.

The Cornhuskers put a lid on Missouri’s passing attack a week after giving up a Big Eight-record 489 yards to Kansas State’s Chad May. Missouri’s Jeff Handy completed 14 of 23 passes for 104 yards.
