The Crescenta Valley and La Canada water polo teams entered the week coming off impressive performances.

Although Crescenta Valley lost a nonleague match against Sunny Hills, 12-11, it was still a noteworthy effort for the Falcons. Sunny Hills, ranked second in Division II, won the match with a goal with 17 seconds left. Ryan Bittle scored five goals for Crescenta Valley.

La Canada junior Brian Ellis scored a school-record 15 goals for the Spartans in a 24-19 victory over Monrovia Oct. 19. It was the sixth-best single-game performance in Southern Section history.

La Canada plays host to perennial Rio Hondo League champion South Pasadena today.

St. Francis’ cross-country team finished fourth in the Division III Sweepstakes race at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational last weekend.

The Golden Knights’ Kevin Koeper and John Stires finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

The Glendale girls’ tennis team will meet Arcadia Friday in a match that will determine the Pacific League championship.

Glendale improved to 7-1 last week with a victory over Muir. Arcadia defeated Hoover to improve to 7-1.

Glendale is led by singles players April Fong, Susie Lu and Sharon Kim, and doubles teams Nina Magallanes-Stephanie Loo, Lala Aratonn-Mariet Agakhauyan and Tracy Staton-Tiffany Fabian.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Glendale College’s football team plays host to Ventura Saturday in a Western State Conference Northern Division game.

Glendale (2-3-1, 1-3-1 in the WSC) is coming off a 47-33 victory over Santa Barbara.

Pathon Rucker rushed for 216 yards for the Vaqueros and established a school record for career yardage. Rucker has 2,317 yards, eclipsing the mark of 2,260 set by Bill Renison from 1961-62.

Jerome Casey scored three touchdowns for Glendale.

The Glendale men’s and women’s cross-country teams travel to Moorpark Saturday for an invitational meet.

In the second of three Western State Conference meets, the Vaquero men and women each finished first. The final WSC meet, which will serve as the conference championships, is scheduled for Nov. 12 at Bakersfield.

Nacho Delgado placed second overall and Luis Jacobo third to lead the Vaquero men, who had also won the first WSC meet.

Auria Roberto was second and Anna Hernandez fifth to lead the Glendale women.

COLLEGES

Occidental’s football team travels to Claremont Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Claremont-Mudd.

Occidental (5-1) is coming off a 52-13 nonconference victory over Menlo, the Tigers second consecutive 50-point game. Occidental defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 51-21, in a SCIAC game Oct. 16.

Against Menlo, quarterback Davin Lundquist gained 110 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Tigers, who are averaging a NCAA Division III-leading 350 rushing yards a game. Hasani Dominoe gained 98 yards and scored a touchdown for Occidental.

The Occidental women’s cross-country team, led by senior Becky Kopchick, is ranked 12th in Division III entering this weekend’s SCIAC Championships.

The Tiger women are 7-0 in dual meets.

The Occidental women’s volleyball team entered the week 14-9 and 4-5 in the SCIAC.

Occidental defeated Cal Lutheran and conference-leading Pomona-Pitzer, but lost to Redlands last week.

Occidental plays Whittier Friday.

PREP ATHLETES OF WEEK

Brian Ellis, La Canada and David Fielder, Crescenta Valley--Ellis, a junior, scored a school-record 15 goals for La Canada in a 24-19 water polo victory over Monrovia. It was the sixth-best single-game performance in Southern Section history.

Fielder, a senior, kicked field goals of 25, 43 and a school-record 52 yards during the Falcons’ 23-21 Pacific League football victory over Pasadena.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK
