COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Stokes, White Used to Be on Same Side

Share

J.J. Stokes’ last workout in San Diego before reporting for two-a-day drills at UCLA in August involved running pass patterns against the University of San Diego defensive backs.

The quarterback: Danny White, Stokes’ teammate at Point Loma High and the starter Saturday for Arizona against the Bruins at the Rose Bowl.

“He called me up and we set it up,” Stokes said. “He can throw the deep ball, 50-60 yards, and the thing I remember from my senior year in high school is that he always threw the ball where Brent Callan and me needed it--low when we needed it, high, whatever.”

Callan went on to play briefly at California before signing a professional baseball contract.

White passed for 3,100 yards and 26 touchdowns in his senior season at Point Loma, 1,535 yards and 15 touchdowns to Stokes.

Wide receiver Bryan Adams, who sat out last season because of ankle problems and has yet to play this year because of a hamstring pull, is running pass patterns again and might get playing time Saturday. . . . Daron Washington, who was UCLA’s No. 1 tailback at the start of the season but has been hampered by injuries that have caused him to sit out three games and be used sporadically in others, is running plays at fullback. Starting fullback James Milliner suffered a calf injury last Saturday at Oregon State and is doubtful for the Arizona game. Freshman Jeff Ruckman is slated to get much of the playing time at the position in the two-back set.
