ON DEFENSE

Los Alamitos held El Dorado to 57 yards of total offense in recording its fifth shutout of the season, 35-0. It marks the Griffins’ 29th consecutive game without a loss.

Los Amigos held Bolsa Grande to minus-16 yards rushing in a 43-7 victory. Brian Baughman was sacked five times for minus-18 yards. The Bolsa Grande quarterback did complete 16 of 34 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown.

Capistrano Valley held Dana Hills to 21 total yards offense in a 34-0 victory. Quarterback Scott Covington, who threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns against San Clemente last week, was sacked 11 times and completed only seven of 14 passes for 40 yards.

TOP PERFORMERS

J.R. Walz carried the ball 24 times for 228 yards--the fifth-best single-game performance in the county this season--and scored four touchdowns as Corona del Mar rolled over Tustin, 35-3.

Irvine’s Tony Mathis gained 191 yards in 42 carries, scoring twice from the ground and once through the air, as the third-ranked Vaqueros rallied to defeat Newport Harbor, 29-21.

Steve Bodnar again put up some more big numbers for Mater Dei. The junior running back gained 190 yards and scored one touchdown in 21 carries to lead the Monarchs past Mission Viejo, 28-11.

Sophomore Michael Graham continued his ground assault, gaining 189 yards and scoring two touchdowns in 24 carries to lead Edison to a 27-14 upset of fourth-ranked Fountain Valley.

Villa Park running back Grant Pearsall gained 169 yards in 31 carries as the Spartans defeated El Modena, 30-9, to climb ahead of the Vanguards in the Orange League standings.

Savanna’s Paul Waldrop completed 17 of 28 passes for 255 yards but had two intercepted as the Rebels lost to Valencia, 48-14. Chris Draft carried 16 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns for Valencia.

Mike Good completed 17 of 30 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns and Brad Melsby was on the receiving end of eight for 86 yards as undefeated Los Alamitos continued its roll with a 35-0 victory over El Dorado.

Quarterback Levi Schuck, who was eight of 13 for 148 yards, completed three touchdowns passes to Tony Gonzalez, who caught of six passes for 102 yards as Huntington Beach remained undefeated with a 42-14 victory over Ocean View.

Sam Gaines completed eight of 13 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, and added a rushing touchdown to lead Capistrano Valley to a 34-0 victory over Dana Hills.

LOOKING AHEAD Los Alamitos and Esperanza, the Empire League favorites that fans have been waiting all season to see play one another, will meet Friday night at Gahr High School in Cerritos. The No. 1-ranked Griffins are 8-0 overall, 3-0 in league; the sixth-ranked Aztecs are 6-2, 3-0.

Last season, quarterback Tim Carey (Stanford) led Los Alamitos to a 34-14 victory in the regular-season meeting, but Esperanza bounced back behind lineman Travis Kirschke (UCLA) to finish as Division II co-champion with the Griffins, playing to a 14-14 standoff in the title game.

Los Alamitos defeated Esperanza in the 1991 Division II title game after the Aztecs had won during the regular season.

The Canyon High booster club sells colorful “Canyon Football” boxer shorts, which are bright yellow and adorned with multicolored moccasins. How well does the $10-a-pair underwear sell? “The girls love them,” a booster salesperson said.

“They’re cuuuuute ,” replied the team’s water girls when asked about the shorts.

So seldom that running back Dwayne Cherrington was the leading passer and quarterback Tristan Lynch the leading receiver in an 18-13 Century League victory over Orange Thursday night. Cherrington hit Lynch for a 27-yard gain on a trick play. Lynch completed only two of three passes for one yard.

Santa Ana Valley’s nickname is the Falcons.
