League Champion Rejoins Edison

The Edison girls’ cross-country team, top-ranked in Orange County and the State Division II, will receive a boost for Saturday’s Sunset League finals.

Junior Elyse Homberger, the defending league champion, will make her initial appearance of the season for the Chargers after recovering from various injuries she sustained during the summer.

Homberger competed Monday in the junior varsity race of the tri-meet against Fountain Valley and Westminster.

“Elyse needed to earn her spot in the top seven, so I had to make her run in the JV race today,” Edison Coach Kristi McGihon. said.

Homberger finished the three-mile course at Edison High in 18 minutes 1 second to win the race. Her time was 17 seconds faster than any time recorded in the varsity race.

The Balboa Bay volleyball club’s 18-and-under boys’ team finished first at the San Castle Classic international tournament in White Rock, British Columbia. Balboa Bay defeated Nike Team Santa Cruz, 15-13, 15-11, for the title Sunday.

Jeremy Darner of Dana Hills High was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Newport Harbor’s Mitch McCoy and Dana Hills’ Bob Hefty were named to the first team. The competition featured six teams from British Columbia, four from California and ones representing Alberta and Manitoba.

Paul La Greca, a member of Mater Dei’s Angelus League championship baseball team in 1990, has accepted a scholarship to play baseball at New Mexico State. La Greca graduated from Cupertino De Anza College and was a starting right fielder for the Dons.
