VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Royal Clinches Berth in Playoffs With Win

The Royal High girls’ volleyball team clinched a playoff berth with a 13-15, 17-15, 15-9, 16-14 Marmonte League victory over Westlake on Tuesday at Royal.

Teri Enright had 22 kills and Jenny Treglown added 19 for the Highlanders (10-5, 9-4 in league play).

Royal, which missed the playoffs last season for only the second time in Coach Bob Ferguson’s 10-year tenure, ensured itself a third-place league finish, behind Agoura and Thousand Oaks.

The Highlanders started the season slowly, but have won four consecutive league matches.

Westlake dropped to 7-6 in league play.

Sophomore setter Heidi Ferguson had 48 assists for the Highlanders, who had to overcome a one-game deficit.

In other girls’ matches:

Thousand Oaks d. Channel Islands, 15-1, 15-1, 15-5--The Lancers (14-9, 11-2) cruised past host Channel Islands (0-13) and clinched second place in the Marmonte League. Janie Penfield had five kills and Erin Kelly had nine assists for the Lancers.

Nordhoff d. Santa Paula, 15-5, 15-5, 15-4--Tacy Franklin, Jami Sawyer and Brandi Keeter each had six kills as visiting Nordhoff (10-4) concluded the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record in Frontier League play.

Stephanie Keeter, Brandi’s twin, led the Rangers with 18 assists and Julie Sandefur added 10 assists for the defending state and Southern Section Division IV champions.

Nordhoff had clinched its fourth consecutive league title last week.

Foothill League tournament--Second-seeded Saugus won two matches in the first day of the two-day tournament at Canyon, the only team to do so. Burbank beat top-seeded Canyon (1-1).

Bell-Jeff d. St. Genevieve, 15-0, 15-3, 15-12--Letty Cabrera and Lauren Barrett each had eight kills to help the Guards clinch the Camino Real League title.

Stefani Nocun added 28 assists for Bell-Jeff (17-1, 13-0).

Campbell Hall d. Crossroads, 15-6, 17-15, 15-8--Elena Dubinsky had 11 kills for host Campbell Hall in a Delphic League match.

Danika Hendrickson had 11 assists and four aces for the Vikings (7-6, 3-4). Teammate Catherine Stenbeck added eight digs.

Newbury Park d. Simi Valley, 15-5, 15-10, 15-5--Meegan Cameron had seven kills and Kari Norberg had 16 assists to lead the Panthers (7-8, 6-7) in a Marmonte League match.

L.A. Baptist d. Village Christian, 15-3, 15-5, 8-15, 15-8--The Knights (9-5, 5-2) clinched second place in the Alpha League at L.A. Baptist. Darcie Frazier led the Knights with 17 kills, Lori Neville added 10 kills and Tunde Hrotko had 32 assists.

Amy Crawford had 11 kills for Village Christian (7-7, 4-4).

Buena d. Oxnard, 15-8, 15-1, 15-6--Rene Goth had nine kills and Beth Ann McGill tallied 20 assists to lead Buena (9-4, 9-4) in a Channel League match at Oxnard.

Oak Park d. Fillmore, 15-1, 15-1, 15-2--Gina Cusano had five kills and three aces for visiting Oak Park in the Tri-Valley League match. Kimi Thompson added three aces and three digs.

Camarillo at Agoura--The Marmonte League match was canceled because the Agoura gymnasium is being used as an evacuation center for residents displaced by the Topanga Canyon fire.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps d. Cal Lutheran 17-15, 13-15, 15-10, 15-7--Vanessa McKenzie had a match-high 24 kills for the visiting Stags (18-9, 9-2) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran (14-12, 5-6).

Cal Lutheran outside hitter Darcy White had a team-high 14 kills and Tara Thomas added 13. Thomas also had 26 assists and 16 digs. Kristen Wegner had seven blocks.
