COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Cook’s Status Questionable

Share

After undergoing tests in Pullman, Wash., during last Saturday’s UCLA-Washington State game and after a follow-up check at UCLA Medical Center on Sunday, quarterback Wayne Cook stayed away from school and practice Monday.

Bruin Coach Terry Donahue said Cook’s status was questionable for this Saturday’s game against Arizona State.

Cook suffered a bruised right kidney on the opening series when he was hit by Washington State’s Signor Mobley, who was offside.

After sitting out a play, Cook returned and completed two passes but was hit late by T.J. Folkers, who was assessed a penalty for roughing the passer.

Another hit put Cook out of the game for good.

Rob Walker finished the game, completing 14 of 33 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, but had an interception and fumbled twice on sacks. Walker, who started five games last season, will start against Arizona State if Cook is unable to play.

Defensive back Robert Gamble and running back Skip Hicks also were injured at Pullman. Gamble’s shoulder probably will prevent him from playing this week. Hicks won’t practice for a couple of days but is expected to be ready for Arizona State. . . . Fullback James Milliner might not be ready for Arizona State as originally believed. He suffered a calf injury at Oregon State two weeks ago. . . . UCLA’s seven-game winning streak is its longest since 1988, when the Bruins won their first seven.
