Denver Bronco Coach Wade Phillips was hospitalized Wednesday because of severe abdominal pain, but was released after about a 15-hour stay and hopes to be at practice today.

Phillips’ condition was diagnosed as gastroenteritis--an inflammation of the stomach and intestines usually caused by a virus.

Seeking a backup quarterback, the Miami Dolphins signed Steve DeBerg. DeBerg, the NFL’s oldest player at 39, gives Miami a cushion of experience following Dan Marino’s season-ending injury last month. Scott Mitchell is the Dolphins’ starter.

The Philadelphia Eagles claimed tackle William (the Refrigerator) Perry in an effort to bolster their leaky run defense. The Chicago Bears waived the 335-pound lineman Tuesday after nine years with the team.

“They didn’t explain explain nothing to me,” Perry said of the Bears. “My role was as a backup and on special teams. The Eagles are giving me a chance to prove myself again.”

Eric Swann, the Phoenix Cardinals’ dominant defensive lineman, will sit out the rest of the season after arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage in his right knee. . . . Cincinnati backup cornerback Sheldon White has a neck condition that might prevent him from playing again. . . . Defensive lineman Mike Gann of the Atlanta Falcons has been put on the injured reserve list because of thoratic nerve palsy in his right shoulder and will sit out the rest of the season. . . . Quarterback Bernie Kosar, cut Monday by the Cleveland Browns, signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
