When Aida Orejel saw the players from Carson and South Gate clustered behind the far fence, cheering after every point, she realized she was playing the deciding match.
“I kind of felt it,” said Orejel, South Gate’s No. 1 singles player. “The pressure was there.”
Orejel, a senior, held on to defeat Merry Arrogante, 6-4, 6-4, and South Gate defeated Carson, 4-3, to win the City Section Division 3-A tennis championship Thursday afternoon at the Racquet Center in Studio City.
The Rams swept the other three singles matches as Roxana Vidaurre, Linda Hong and Nadia Arviso won in straight sets.
South Gate (15-0) won its first City Section title. Carson (14-1) lost in the final for the second year in a row.
In 4-A, Woodland Hills Taft (16-0) breezed by Palisades, 6-1, to win its second consecutive title. The Toreadors’ No. 1 singles player, Julia Feldman, defeated Bentleigh Borgeson, 6-2, 6-1, and Brahna Pastorini defeated Shana Miller, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
