Cornhuskers Wrap Up Title : Big Eight: Victory over Iowa State sends Nebraska to Orange Bowl for a third consecutive time.
Tommie Frazier and Calvin Jones powered the Nebraska ground attack and the Cornhuskers defeated Iowa State, 49-17, Saturday. The victory clinched Nebraska’s third consecutive trip to the Orange Bowl and gave the Cornhuskers a 10-0 start for the first time since 1983.
“I’m glad that’s over,” Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. “This is our third straight Big Eight championship. That’s quite an accomplishment. At least I think it is.”
Frazier had 125 yards and three touchdowns and Jones had 208 yards and one touchdown for the No. 4 Cornhuskers, who are 6-0 in the Big Eight and close out the regular season against Oklahoma at Lincoln on Nov. 26.
Iowa State defeated Nebraska, Iowa State, 19-10, at Ames, Iowa, last year, but chances for the Cyclones (3-7, 2-7) to pull a second consecutive upset of Nebraska dimmed in the first three minutes when turnovers led to a 14-0 lead for Nebraska.
Nebraska’s Tyrone Williams recovered when James Brooks fumbled the opening kickoff and Williams again recovered when Rodney Guggenheim fumbled on the first play after the ensuing kickoff. Both fumbles led to Nebraska touchdowns.
