OUTLOOK

Coach Cahill has won two league titles and has taken his team to the playoffs in each of his three years at El Modena. The Vanguards finished second in the league race last season and are picked to battle Villa Park and Canyon for this year’s league championship. “We just have to be a little more defensive-minded this year,” Cahill said. And after watching his team play this summer, Cahill says it is “200% better than last year’s team.” Last year, the Vanguards went to the Division II-A playoffs but were eliminated in the first round by Kennedy, 45-36. League MVP Shine returns along with point guard Foyle. Shine averaged 16.5 points and 12 rebounds, and Foyle averaged more than five assists. By adding six-foot Mariner, a transfer from Santa Ana Valley, El Modena has six players over 5-8. Cahill is looking to Mariner for rebounding, but she has to learn the system in a very short time after missing a great deal of summer play. “Since we have such a big team we will probably see zones all day long from the other teams,” Cahill said. The Vanguards aren’t an outside shooting threat, but they should be able to control the boards on both ends of the court against anyone.
