SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Anaheim’s Joel Vasquez kicked a 23-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to give the Colonists a 34-32 upset of third-seeded Arroyo in a first-round Division VI playoff game Friday at Arroyo High.

“It was just like an extra point,” said Vasquez, who added four of those plus a 35-yard field goal in the victory.

Anaheim (6-5) advanced to a quarterfinal game against Whittier next Friday night.

The Colonists began their final drive at their 26 with three minutes to play and, as they had most of the night, followed sophomore running back Reuben Droughns to the winning score. Droughns, who rushed for 361 yards and four touchdowns in 26 carries, carried on eight of the nine plays for 63 of Anaheim’s 67 yards on the drive.

“We didn’t have to throw the ball,” Anaheim Coach Todd Borowski said. “We had Reuben.”

Droughns scored on runs of 66, 74, 21 and 75 yards, but the Colonists almost wilted during a comeback by Arroyo (8-3), which turned a 31-19 deficit into a 32-31 lead on Juan Sanchez’s two-yard run with 3:17 to play.

The score was set up by a 32-yard pass from Gabriel Agredano to Steve Hernandez, who made a diving catch at the two. Agredano threw for 407 yards on 32 off 43 passing with only one interception. Hernandez caught nine passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.
