OUTLOOK
The Costa Mesa football team won its first league title since 1978, and the basketball team hopes to reap some residuals. “We hope their success will carry over,” Brewer said. “It’s always been a dilemma here: trying to build on no success.” Although the league is still extremely tough, there is some reason for hope. The Mustangs’ finish last season showed marked improvement over the 3-19 record in Brewer’s first year. And Merrifield, who had quit the team because of conflicts with his work schedule, rejoined the Mustangs recently. With two starters returning, they are in a much better position to continue improving. Brewer believes winning at least 14 games isn’t an unrealistic goal. Steck, who started the second half of last season, is a physical small forward with a nice left-handed outside shoot. Three football players are expected to make an impact: Smith, a 285-pound tackle, Chatman, a transfer from Foothill, and Crenshaw, a transfer from Edison.
