The powerful barn of Richard Mandella has gotten even stronger.

Arcangues, who shocked the world with his $269.20 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, will arrive at Mandella’s barn this afternoon after clearing quarantine.

Owner Daniel Wildenstein was going to retire the 5-year-old Sagace horse to stud after his shocking victory over Bertando and 11 others in the $3 million Classic, but there was a change in plans.

Arcangues, who had never raced on dirt before the Breeders’ Cup, arrived from France on Wednesday night with Ocean Indien, a 2-year-old who will run in the Generous Stakes on Saturday, then was placed in quarantine at Hollywood Park.

“The owner has changed his mind and wants the horse to continue racing,” said Chris Baker, Mandella’s assistant trainer.

Mandella is in Japan preparing Kotashaan for a start in the $3.6 million Japan Cup on Sunday.

“Arcangues is going back into training,” Baker said. “He should be out of quarantine (Friday) afternoon and the plan is to trot him on the track as soon as possible after he clears quarantine.

“We’re delighted to have him here and think his return to training is great for the sport.”

Trained by Andre Fabre, Arcangues, who was bred in Kentucky, has raced only 16 times and has five victories, two seconds and two thirds. The big payday in the Classic boosted his earnings to $1,878,520.

Wildenstein also turned Serrant, who finished 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, over to Mandella. The 5-year-old Bering gelding has won 11 of 15 starts and was second to Star Of Cozzene in the Man O’War at Belmont Park in his U.S. debut on Sept. 18.

River Special, who at one time was the future book favorite for last May’s Kentucky Derby, is scheduled to make his first start since March 14 in the third race on Saturday.

The winner of the 1992 Hollywood Futurity drew the rail in the six-furlong Bedside Promise Handicap, which has five other entrants. Laffit Pincay will ride the 3-year-old Riverman colt, who worked five furlongs in 57 flat last Sunday.

Echo Of Yesterday made it three victories in as many starts at Hollywood Park with a two-length victory over 18-1 shot His Legacy in the $114,100 On Trust Handicap on Thursday at Hollywood Park.

Run off the pace by Chris McCarron, the 9-2 third choice, took the lead in deep stretch and won in 1:27 for the 7 1/2 furlongs. Second in the 1992 running behind stablemate Individualist, His Legacy defeated Bossanova by a nose for the place. Hill Pass, a 54-1 outsider, was another half-length behind in fourth.

“He’s had trouble bleeding at certain times of the year and Marty (Wygod, the owner,) has been real patient with him,” said winning trainer Ron Ellis. “He knows he can run. We gave him some time after Del Mar, and it took him a couple of races to get back. He bled even before he got to the races, and that’s why it took us so long to get him started.

“I don’t know why he bleeds, but it usually happens in February, March and April. Maybe it’s the pollen. He’s a versatile horse with speed and Chris has a touch with him.”

A 4-year-old gelded son of Pirate’s Bounty, Echo Of Yesterday has won six of nine lifetime. He earned $69,100 Thursday and paid $11.60.

J.F. Williams, who had won four of six starts at Hollywood Park, finished last in the field of 12 as the 9-5 favorite.

“He broke a step behind, but just the same, I was in a good place on the backside,” jockey Laffit Pincay said. “I was trying to get him to the outside where he could make a good run, but he never did. He got beat (soundly) and really had no excuse. What can you say?”

Individual Style, who has won four of six starts, is the 2-1 favorite in the $100,000 Hollywood Prevue Breeders’ Cup Stakes, the feature of a special 13-race twilight program today at Hollywood Park. Post time is 4 p.m.

Owned by the First Cabin Stable and trained by Lin Wheeler, Individual Style broke his maiden by 10 lengths on this track last June and has won two stakes at Fairplex Park. Most recently, he was a distant third as the favorite in the California Cup Juvenile. Chris Antley will become the colt’s fourth rider this evening.

Soul Of The Matter, who broke his maiden by four lengths in his first race, on Oct. 30 at Santa Anita, is the 5-2 second choice. With Kent Desormeaux in Japan waiting to ride Kotashaan in the Japan Cup, McCarron has the mount on the son of Private Terms.

The rest of the field includes recent maiden winners Egayant and R.J.’s Raider; Subtle Trouble, who has won three of his seven starts, and New York invader Personal Favor.

Horse Racing Notes

Aaron Gryder, who won four races at Hollywood Park on Thanksgiving, 1987, repeated the feat Thursday. He won the second with Twicetonight, the fourth on Yerna, the sixth with first-time starter Lotta Reality and the seventh with Eminere. Gryder, then an apprentice, won the riding title at Hollywood Park in 1987. . . . There are two other minor stakes on the program tonight--the $50,000 Eloquent at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf and the $55,000-added Allez France at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Bold Windy is the 5-2 favorite in the Eloquent and Wedding Ring is the 2-1 choice in the Allez France. . . . Corby, who hasn’t been out since finishing sixth in the Kentucky Derby, worked a very slow half-mile, in 52 4/5, Thursday morning for trainer John Sadler.
