OUTLOOK

Miller lost four starters from a team that was unbeaten in Sunset League play and reached the Division I-A finals last season, only to lose to Mater Dei. “My other two returners only played sparingly, so essentially, we’ve got only one player coming back from last season,” Miller said. But that one player is Gonzalez, who earned All-Southern Section, all-county and Sunset MVP honors. At 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, Gonzalez was one of the most dominant players in the county, averaging 17 points and 8 rebounds last season. He has made an oral commitment to play football and basketball at California next season. “I guess if you’re going to have only one guy coming back, he’s not a bad one to have,” Miller said. Hatziris will play the point and is a good playmaker and defender who helped the junior varsity finish third last season. Malmquist, one of the varsity returners; Jones, another junior varsity standout, and Holland, a transfer from Long Beach St. Anthony’s, should also contend for starting spots. But since Gonzalez, Holland, Flagg and Draeger are still leading the Oilers through the Division II football playoffs, don’t expect the Huntington Beach basketball team to click until mid-January.
