BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cougars Make Toothpicks Out of Thousand Oaks

The Crenshaw Cougars remained undefeated with a stunning 121-66 win over tournament host Thousand Oaks Friday in the championship game Friday at Newbury Park High.

Kris Johnson, who signed with UCLA, scored 40 points, Cal-bound Tremaine Fowlkes had 27 points and 12 rebounds and Houston-bound Tommie Davis had 21 assists. The Cougars have not lost a game since the Washington tournament last December. Records: Crenshaw 5-0; Thousand Oaks 5-2. *

Huntington Park 55, Faith Baptist 54--Joe Covarrubias scored 14 points to lead Huntington Park in the fifth-place consolation of the Thousand Oaks tournament Friday. Records: Faith Baptist 4-4, Huntington Park 2-3. *

North Hollywood 62, Dorsey 56--The Dons cried foul when Ricky Blackmon’s shot was blocked by Damon Ollie with 4 minutes and 56 seconds left in the North Hollywood tournament championship.

Dorsey Coach Kevin Gibson was hit with two technical fouls. Arthur Lee made three of the four free-throw attempts for a 49-43 lead, and Dorsey didn’t come closer than three points thereafter. Records: Dorsey 5-1; North Hollywood 6-2. *

Manual Arts 68, Pasadena 59--Despite David Rickenbacker and Kevin Pinckney being out with the flu, the Toilers had enough firepower to beat Pasadena in the consolation semifinals of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High.

Soeki Thompson and Clavern Luckett each had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Toilers.

Manual Arts played in the consolation championship Saturday.

Jefferson 101, Canoga Park 69--Anthony Martin scored 28 points and John Johnson added 20 more to lead the Democrats Friday in the first round of the Pacific Open at Gardena High.

Crenshaw 71, Faith Baptist 23--Kristaan Johnson led the Cougars with 20 points and Reggie McFerren had 14 Wednesday in the first round of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

The game was stopped with 2 minutes, 40 seconds to play in the first half when 6-foot-8 Crenshaw center Leon Watson shattered the backboard on a dunk.

Watson sustained a deep cut to his right shoulder and was taken by paramedics to Los Robles Regional Medical Center. Note: Game called with 2:40 left in the second quarter because of a broken backboard. *

Belmont 61, Verdugo Hills 57--Jason Surratt’s two free throws early in overtime proved to be the difference in a Northeast League game Wednesday. Records: Verdurgo Hills 3-4; Belmont 1-1. *

Loyola 76, St. Bernard 69--Toby Bailey scored a season-high 33 points and his brother, Moose, had 21 as the Cubs won their Mission League opener Wednesday. Records: Loyola 7-2; St. Bernard 6-3. *

Fremont 84, Jordan 53--Calvin Patterson scored a game-high 30 points and Thomas Hildredth chipped in 17 Wednesday in a Southeastern Conference game at Jordan.

Clem Breedlove led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Records: Fremont 3-2; Jordan 1-4. *

Wilson 64, Verdugo Hills 62-- Forward Oscar Diaz led the Mules with 19 points Tuesday in a second-round victory in the Alhambra Tournament. *

Huntington Beach 65, Manual Arts 56--Senior center Tony Gonzalez had 31 points and 13 rebounds to lead Huntington Beach past the Toilers Tuesday in the first round of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High.

Cleveland 67, Los Angeles 64--Joe Richards scored a game-high 20 points but it was not enough as the Romans fell in a nonleague game Tuesday. *

Bell 65, Huntington Park 54--Jerry Espinoza and Ricardo Lopez each scored 21 points to lead host Bell in a Southeastern Conference game Monday. Guard Joe Covarrubias led the Spartans with 18 points. Records: Huntington Park 0-2; Bell 3-3.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Roosevelt 58, Locke 42--Roosevelt managed to come away with the Southeastern victory Friday, but it took a little more effort than the host Roughriders anticipated.

Roosevelt Coach Lorenzo Garcia benched three starters for missing practice.

On the opening tip-off, center Zenobia Tyson Hunt was poked in the eye and did not play in the first quarter.

The Roughriders still managed to take a 17-13 lead after the first quarter and put the game away in the second, holding the Saints scoreless. Records: Locke 4-5; Roosevelt 5-1. --KIRBY LEE *

South Gate 65, Jefferson 36--Ruby Maciel scored 27 points to lead the host Rams in a Southeastern Conference game. The sophomore also made nine of nine free-throw attempts and had 11 points in the second quarter as South Gate limited the 3-A champions to eight points or fewer in the final three quarters. Records: Jefferson 3-3; South Gate 7-3. *

Wilson 56, Hollywood 17--The Mules jumped to a 12-2 lead in the Northern Conference victory at Hollywood on Wednesday. Nine Wilson players scored, led by Donna Gordon with 17 points and Veronica Lopez with 13. Records: Wilson 3-3; Hollywood 0-2.

Eagle Rock 64, Lincoln 60--The visiting Tigers wasted a three-point halftime lead and a 20-point effort by Innocencia Ibarra in the Northern Conference defeat on Wednesday. Records: Lincoln 3-2; Eagle Rock 4-1.

Dorsey 54, Huntington Park 32--Alexis Glenn scored 19 points and Marae Glenn added 16 more in a nonleague game Tuesday. Debra Cifuentes came off the bench to lead the Spartans with 10 points.
