A gunman wounded three South Gate teen-age women Thursday as they tried to find their way home from a party in San Gabriel by walking along the San Bernardino Freeway, police said.

Virginia Romero, 18; Diane Enriquez, 19, and Gabriella Bengoa, 18, drove to the party about 8 p.m. Wednesday with several members of South Gate’s Grape Street gang, according to San Gabriel Police Lt. Jim Goodman.

After one of the men made unwanted advances toward one woman, the three women left the party about 2:45 a.m. and walked onto Interstate 10, Goodman said.

Two men followed on foot, words were exchanged, and one man drew a small-caliber pistol, firing five to six rounds, Goodman said.

Romero was shot in the head and was in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center. Enriquez was wounded in the shoulder and hand and was in stable condition. Bengoa was struck in the shoulder and treated and released at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center.

No arrests had been made, police said Thursday.
