A 63-year-old man killed in a San Diego Freeway collision Wednesday night has been identified as Frank Rose Jr. of Garden Grove, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

Rose was driving south just north of the Seal Beach Boulevard off-ramp when his car was hit by a van being driven by a suspected drunk driver, according to CHP Officer Denise Quesada.

“The impact of the accident was so severe that the man’s car spun out of control and was basically cut in half,” Quesada said.

An off-duty Long Beach firefighter who was passing by just after the accident pulled Rose from the car and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Rose died at the scene.

The driver of the van, 49-year-old James Edward Kruger of Garden Grove, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene.

He was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and taken to Orange County Jail.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call the CHP’s Westminster office at (714) 892-4426.
