COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Men’s Team, Missing Seven Players, Wins Anyway

Chapman, left with six players after seven were sent home for violations of team rules, defeated Dominican College, 80-73, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday in San Francisco.

Stephan Mumaw and Tony Gonzalez, the only starters available, scored 22 and 19 points for Chapman (10-6).

Coach Mike Bokosky sent starters Greg Reynolds, Umahl Anderson and Aaron Cornell and reserves Adam Dzierznski, Egar Diaz, Steve Van Horn and Rod Summers home in a van two days early. The college would not announce the infractions.

Brian Wood scored 16 and Toby Curto 13 for Chapman, which plays Menlo tonight. Dominican is 2-14.

In other nonconference men’s basketball:

Western New Mexico 122, Pacific Christian College 93--Forward Charles Ross scored 31 points and Eric Bajuf 19 for visiting Pacific Christian College (10-13). Gary Taylor had 22 points for Western New Mexico (10-6).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

UC San Diego 72, Chapman 65--Melody Earle scored 31 points and Heidi Sorour added 13 for Chapman (3-14). UC San Diego is 7-8.

In women’s gymnastics:

Cal State Fullerton 185.7, San Jose State 177.5--Fullerton’s Celeste Delia was first in all-around competition with 38.075 points, and teammate Cristi Clifford followed with 37.075. Fullerton is 1-0.

In the Cal State Los Angeles tennis tournament:

SCC men dominate--Southern California College’s Matt Scott, Ross Andel, Mike Munoz and Khuang Tien all swept to singles victories in the tournament.

For the women, Wendy Andel won by default and Cathy Binquist swept her opponent to advance.
