PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Brea-Olinda Overcomes Mater Dei

Share

Mary Hauser, Mater Dei girls’ basketball coach, said beforehand that her team was a little excited, a little anxious and maybe even a little scared.

They did not show it.

Fourth-ranked Mater Dei hung onto top-ranked Brea-Olinda like a bad flu before finally falling, 65-49, in front of an overflow crowd at Brea.

With 7 minutes 6 seconds left, it was a five-point game, 47-42.

But like the Ladycats (19-0) have done so often before, they excelled late. Lee Moulin hit a three-pointer, Nicole Erickson went coast-to-coast after grabbing a defensive rebound, and then came 11 consecutive free throws--Moulin was five for five, Erickson six for six.

It was about the only place on the floor from which Brea was shooting well.

“When we’re not shooting well,” Moulin said, “we usually get our points from somewhere else.”

Brea--which had four starters shooting 46.8% or better--shot only 32% from the field against the Monarchs. Erickson had a game-high 20 points, Moulin had 15 and Kiyoko Miller had 13.

Mater Dei (15-3) got 15 from Melody Peterson including three first-quarter three-pointers.

The Monarchs tied the game at 18 with Allison Luckey’s basket with 7:13 left in the second quarter, but a 10-0 run gave Brea the lead for good.

In other nonleague girls’ games:
