COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Duke Needs Late Tip-In to Survive Notre Dame Road Upset Bid, 74-72

Marty Clark tipped in Grant Hill’s miss with three seconds to play, lifting No. 2 Duke over Notre Dame, 74-72, Wednesday at Durham, N.C.

Monty Williams scored 34 points for Notre Dame (5-12). But the Irish, who led by 12 points late in the first half, made a turnover with 14 seconds to play, setting up Clark’s tiebreaking tap.

Hill drove toward the basket and pulled up for a 10-footer that rolled off the rim. Clark came from the left side for the tap to give Duke (14-1) the lead.

The Blue Devils won their 87th consecutive nonconference home game.

No. 3 Kansas 62, Oklahoma State 61--Steve Woodberry made a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds to play in overtime, giving Kansas the Big Eight victory at Lawrence, Kan.

Fred Burley made a free throw with 10.4 seconds left, putting Oklahoma State (13-6, 2-2) ahead, 61-59.

After Kansas took the rebound on the missed second free throw, Woodberry swished the game-winner. He led Kansas (18-2, 3-1) with 17 points.

No. 4 North Carolina 90, Florida State 77--Derrick Phelps scored a career-high 22 points and Dante Calabria added 20 to lead the Tar Heels in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla. North Carolina (16-3, 4-2) scored the first 12 points and led, 47-29, at halftime. The Tar Heels held on in the second half after Florida State (8-7, 1-6) pulled to within 11 points on two occasions.

No. 9 Kentucky 79, South Carolina 67--Jared Prickett sparked a second-half run with a tip-in and layup off a steal and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to lift the Wildcats over South Carolina in a Southeastern Conference game at Lexington, Ky. Jeff Brassow equaled a career high with 25 points as Kentucky (15-3, 5-2) won its 32nd consecutive game in Rupp Arena. South Carolina is 5-10, 2-4.

No. 11 Indiana 78, No. 17 Minnesota 66--Damon Bailey scored 19 points and set an Indiana record for three-point baskets in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind. Bailey’s four three-pointers gave him 149 for his career, one more than the record set last year by Calbert Cheaney. Indiana (12-3, 5-1) led by seven points at halftime and held off a brief rally by Minnesota (13-5, 4-2) in the closing minutes.

No. 18 Maryland 73, Clemson 53--Duane Simpkins matched his career high with 18 points, including eight in a pivotal second-half run in an ACC game at College Park, Md. Maryland (12-3, 5-1) never trailed in its fourth consecutive victory. Kyle Freeman had a career-best 16 points and Sharone Wright had 13 rebounds for Clemson (10-8, 1-5).

No. 20 Alabama Birmingham 62, DePaul 59--Carter Long scored 21 points and sparked a second-half spree that lifted the Blazers in a Great Midwest game at Birmingham. Long had seven points during a 16-4 run that put UAB (15-2, 3-1) ahead, 55-46. DePaul is 12-4, 2-3.

North Carolina State 84, No. 21 Georgia Tech 78--Guards Lakista McCuller and Curtis Marshall scored 19 points each to lead the Wolfpack in an ACC game at Raleigh, N.C. North Carolina State (6-10, 2-4) watched a 17-point lead dwindle to three late in the game behind the play of James Forrest, who finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds. But the Wolfpack went 17 for 23 from the free-throw line to hold on.

No. 23 Saint Louis 76, No. 22 Marquette 66--Erwin Claggett scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half of a Great Midwest game and the Billikens avenged their only loss, at St. Louis. Claggett made four three-pointers in the first 6:07 and the Billikens (15-1, 3-1) hit their first five to take a 24-14 lead.

Billy McCaffrey scored 25 points to lead Vanderbilt (10-5, 3-3) in an 85-73 SEC victory over Tennessee (3-12, 1-6) at Nashville, Tenn. . . . Cornel Parker scored on a driving layup with 39 seconds to play as Virginia (11-5, 5-2) took a 61-59 victory over Wake Forest (12-6, 3-3) in an ACC game at Winston-Salem, N.C. . . . James Winters scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead Iowa (8-7, 2-4) to an 86-76 Big Ten victory over Northwestern (9-6, 0-6) at Evanston, Ill. . . . Shawn Respert matched his career high with 32 points--including all of the scoring in a 10-0 run in the second half--to lead Michigan State (13-6, 4-3) to a 77-71 Big Ten victory over Ohio State (9-9, 2-5) at Columbus, Ohio. . . . Billy Curley went inside for his 28 points to lift Boston College (14-5, 5-3) to an 85-68 victory over St. John’s (8-8, 2-6) in a Big East game at New York.
