GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Shine, El Modena Defense Lead 51-36 Upset of 10th-Ranked Villa Park

Jamie Shine had 19 points and 14 rebounds to help El Modena to a 51-36 upset of Villa Park, the 10th-ranked team in Orange County, in a Century League girls’ basketball game Thursday at El Modena.

Norah Mariner added 14 points and nine rebounds for El Modena (8-9, 4-2).

Villa Park is (17-3, 5-1). El Modena held Maureen Skehan, Villa Park’s leading scorer at 16.3 points a game, to six points before she fouled out.

In other Century League games:

Foothill 42, Orange 41--Charlene Conley of host Orange had a chance to tie it with one second left but made only of two free throws. Stacey Brunansky had 12 points and Leanna Fries 10 for Foothill (6-13, 2-4).

In the Freeway League

Troy 60, La Habra 46--Jennie Gadd scored 21 points and Dinah Shah added 13 and eight assists for visiting Troy (14-5, 6-0). Sydney Rogers had 12 points for La Habra (9-9, 3-3).

Buena Park 41, Sonora 28--Jeanine Fields scored 12 points for visiting Buena Park (5-13, 2-4). Trashawn Banford had 10 for Sonora (1-16, 0-6).

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 58, Los Amigos 21--Erryn Gutjahr scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for Kennedy (14-7, 7-2). Los Amigos dropped to 1-17 and 1-8.

La Quinta 58, Santiago 43--Linda Rodriguez had 27 points and 11 rebounds for La Quinta (15-4, 9-0) and guard Rhonda Gondringer added 15 points. Cari Remmel had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Santiago (5-14, 2-7).

Pacifica 32, Bolsa Grande 26--Guard Erin Kiyomura scored seven of her ten points for Pacifica (7-11, 3-6) in the fourth quarter.

Rancho Alamitos 53, Garden Grove 38--Akilah Rodgers had 15 points, 24 rebounds and seven blocked shots and Sally Vasquez had 14 points for host Rancho Alamitos (14-6, 8-1). Michol Murray scored 19 points for Garden Grove (7-11, 5-4).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 101, Corona del Mar 37--Erin Stovall had 20 points and Jamie Oenning had 18 and every player scored for second-ranked Woodbridge (20-0, 9-0). Rosalie Kane scored 12 points for Corona del Mar (9-10, 4-5).

Newport Harbor 54, Saddleback 30--Genevieve Evarts had 13 points and Dianne Pulido had 15 rebounds and six points for eighth-ranked Newport Harbor (15-5, 8-1). Nicole Wiora scored 10 points for Saddleback (4-13, 0-9).

University 67, Santa Margarita 38--Jennifer Stanley had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for host University (11-6, 5-4). Shannon Noonan scored 17 points for Santa Margarita (4-13, 2-7).

Tustin 51, Irvine 42--Senior guard Sarah Davis had a triple-double with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists for Tustin (14-7, 6-3). Shawnee Stevens had 19 points for Irvine (9-9, 3-6).

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 54, Dana Hills 41--Leticia Oseguera scored 19 and Melody Peterson 15 for No. 4 Mater Dei (16-3, 7-0). Karun Grossman had 19 for Dana Hills (14-6, 4-3).

San Clemente 61, Mission Viejo 42--Michelle Macintyre had 23 points for visiting San Clemente (15-5, 4-2), which is ranked ninth in Orange County.

Capistrano Valley 54, El Toro 39--Susan Scott had 18 points and sister Katie had 13 for Capistrano Valley (12-8, 4-3).

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 66, Edison 61--Marie Philman scored 30 points, 26 in the second half for Edison (13-7, 4-5). Alison Juroe scored 15 points and Farrah Magee had 13 for sixth-ranked Ocean View (16-4, 7-2).

Fountain Valley 58, Rosary 45--Jen Ludwicki had 20 points for host Fountain Valley (15-5, 7-2), the seventh-ranked team in the county.

Fountain Valley outscored Rosary, 16-2, in the first quarter.

Marina 59, Westminster 47--Shandy Robbins had 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 steals and Martita Emde added 12 points and eight assists for fifth-ranked Marina (15-5, 8-1). Angie Nguyen scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, for host Westminster (7-13, 2-7).

Santa Ana 70, Huntington Beach 58--Karina Gonzalez scored 20 points and Leticia Gil added 12 and a school-record 12 assists for visiting Santa Ana (10-11, 2-7). The Saints also set a team record for single-game scoring, and tied another with eight three-pointers.
