ROUNDUP : Okenwa Leads Master’s to 73-70 Comeback Win

Emeka Okenwa scored a game-high 25 points--including 16 in the second half--to power The Master’s College to a 73-70 come-from-behind victory over host Cal State Dominguez Hills in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night.

It was the ninth victory in a row for the Mustangs (20-3), their 16th in 17 games, and their seventh in nine games this season against teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Dominguez Hills (12-7) took an early 15-2 lead, but Master’s narrowed its deficit to 35-31 at halftime and took the lead for good when Okenwa hit a jump shot from the left baseline to give the Mustangs a 59-58 advantage with 5 1/2 minutes left.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hoover 55, Crescenta Valley 54--Andreh Allaharyan scored with two seconds remaining to give Hoover the upset in a Pacific League game.

Allaharyan led all scorers with 23 points. Brock Jacobsen scored 20 points for Crescenta Valley (13-8. 3-4). Hoover improved to 8-13, 1-6.

Thousand Oaks 52, Agoura 44--Peter Lauer scored a team-high 19 points for Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Sophomore Brian Laibow scored 21 points to lead Agoura (13-6, 7-2). No other Agoura player scored more than six.

Rio Mesa 74, Ventura 71--Rio Mesa trailed, 42-32, at halftime in the Channel League game, but cut Ventura’s lead to a point at the end of the third quarter. Sean Britt led the Spartans’ charge with 31 points and Rudy Swanger added 16.

Oxnard 53, Hueneme 43--Jewels Eubanks scored 13 points and Chris Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds as host Oxnard (8-11, 4-5) won the Channel League game. George Jones scored a game-high 27 points for Hueneme (2-15, 0-9).

Westlake 73, Newbury Park 55--Erik Bentz had 16 points and 10 rebounds for host Westlake in a Marmonte League game. Matt Smiley added 16 points for the Warriors (11-5, 5-3). Adam Reinwasser and Scott Ireland each scored 17 for Newbury Park (5-10, 1-6).

Highland 63, Littlerock 55--Golden League scoring leaders Jonathan George of Littlerock and Pharoah Davis of Highland each had 24 points and 10 rebounds, but sophomore John Burrell made the difference for host Highland (13-6, 8-3). Burrell, a forward, scored 17 points and added 17 rebounds.

Palmdale 82, Quartz Hill 43--Al Lairson scored 19 points and Maurice Wright added 13 as host Palmdale (17-3, 11-0) rolled to its 11th consecutive Golden League victory.

St. Francis 66, Bishop Amat 53--Chris Ott, a 6-11 senior, scored 15 points to lead St. Francis (16-5, 7-1) in a Del Rey League game at Bishop Amat.

Mihail Papadopulos, Dan Bir and Tim Murphy each had 12 points for St. Francis.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

La Verne 71, Cal Lutheran 60--Cal Lutheran led at the half despite hitting only one of its first 21 field-goal tries, but was unable to hold on in the second half. Guard Tiffany Hall scored 25 points and had five steals and teammate Rachell Auld added 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Regals.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 86, Hoover 25--Sarah Hagman scored 35 points to lead the Falcons’ rout of Hoover (3-14, 3-4) in a Pacific League game.

The Falcons (16-5, 6-1) led, 25-8, after the first quarter. Stephanie Labor recorded her fifth triple-double of the season, with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Sara Strother added 23 points.

Nordhoff 67, Moorpark 49--Senior Rachel McSorley scored 19 points to lead the host Rangers (16-3, 5-0) in a Frontier league game. Thy Nguyen paced Moorpark (5-12, 2-3) with 21 points.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Moorpark 7, Nordhoff 1--Pat Russo scored a hat trick and Curtis Silverest added two goals in Moorpark’s 15th straight victory.

With the match tied, 1-1, Moorpark (20-2, 5-0) scored six times in the second half.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Reina 3, Bishop Diego 1--Michelle Nuesca had two goals and one assist and Sami Conroy scored the other goal, keeping La Reina undefeated in the Tri-Valley league.
