BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Estancia Keeps Coach Brown at 399

Laguna Hills’ Dave Brown will have to wait another day to gain his 400th coaching victory. Estancia kept him from that milestone Wednesday by defeating the Hawks, 60-51, in a Pacific Coast League boys’ basketball at Laguna Hills High.

Zack Richardson, Clay Frenz and Chris Candlish each scored 15 points for Estancia.

Mike Scaglione had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, who led, 18-14, at the end of the first quarter and trailed, 33-31, at halftime.

Brown will get another shot at 400 Friday night against Costa Mesa.

In other Pacific Coast League games:

Century 70, Costa Mesa 48--Sixth-ranked Century (20-3, 6-1) remained tied for the league lead with Trabuco Hills. Hector Negrete scored 17 and Thomas Harmon 15 for the host Centurions.

Trabuco Hills 65, Laguna Beach 61--Ryan Karnoff scored 19 points, Rob Warnick had 18 and John Paisley 16 for the No. 8 Mustangs. Ian McDonald had a game-high 29 points and Brandon Bloch had 16 points for Laguna Beach (5-16, 1-6).

In the Century League:

Foothill 85, Villa Park 69--Erik Williams, who had 17 rebounds, scored 24 of his 34 points in the second half for host Foothill (9-14, 3-4). Sean Morris added 18 points for the Knights. Villa Park drops to 3-16, 0-7.

Orange 69, Canyon 40--David Neal had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and third-ranked Orange (19-2, 7-0) won its 10th consecutive game. Pat Krauss had a game-high 14 points and Gil Gonzales had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Santa Ana Valley 91, El Modena 45--Olujimi Mann had 27 points and nine assists and Michael Riggins had 20 points for fourth-ranked Santa Ana Valley (20-3, 6-1). Ryan Villmer and Seijin Lee each had 12 points for El Modena (9-13, 3-4).

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 46, Cypress 40--Esperanza (15-7, 5-2) remained in second place, two games behind Los Alamitos after defeating Cypress (12-10, 3-4) at home. Mike Thimgan had a game-high 18 points for the Aztecs.

Katella 66, El Dorado 53--Katella (13-7, 4-3) took over sole possession of third place with a 13-point victory at El Dorado. Mike Pahl had a game-high 17 points for the Knights.

Los Alamitos 71, Loara 40--The No. 2 Griffins outscored Loara, 25-6, in the third quarter. Ali Ton had 17 points and Ryan Staniec had 15 points for Los Alamitos (19-3, 7-0). Scott Davis finished with a game-high 18 points for Loara (11-11, 1-6).

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 61, Santiago 48--Bolsa Grande (11-10, 7-4) remained tied for second place with la Quinta after a 13-point victory at home. Tuan Pham led the Matadores with 16 points.

Kennedy 69, Garden Grove 60--Rich Anderson had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds and Alex Garcia had 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for Kennedy (7-15, 5-6).

Mike Campuzano had 18 points and Tim Denk had 14 for Garden Grove (7-14, 2-9).

La Quinta 77, Los Amigos 59--Kevin Doane scored 26 points and Greg Greenfield scored 24 for La Quinta (12-9, 7-4). Chris Yu and Jason Weiss each had 14 points for Los Amigos (10-12, 6-5).

Pacifica 45, Rancho Alamitos 37--Jon Surface scored 19 points and Chris Vlasic had 12 for fifth-ranked Pacifica (20-1, 11-0).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 51, Saddleback 44--Ramin Bastini, who had six blocked shots, had 13 points and Eric Schiff added 10 points for host Corona del Mar (12-11, 4-7).

Santa Margarita 41, Newport Harbor 39--Brad Finneran made a 12-foot jumpshot with two seconds remaining for seventh-ranked Santa Margarita (18-5, 10-1). Finneran scored 13 of his 26 points in the first quarter. Ramy Shoukry scored 15 points for host Newport Harbor (11-12, 4-7), which held Santa Margarita to 19 points in the final three quarters.

Tustin 75, University 63--Five out of six players scored in double figures for Tustin (16-7, 9-2). Doug Gottlieb scored 17 points and David Lalazarian 15. Demitrius Zeigler had 28 points for University (13-9, 6-5).

Woodbridge 69, Irvine 54--Chris Talbot scored 15 points to lead Woodbridge (10-12, 4-7) at home. Greg Foster had a game-high 24 for Irvine (8-15, 3-8).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 93, Malibu Camp Kilpatrick 45--Damian Raibon had 33 points and 14 rebounds to help St. Margaret’s win its 11th game in a row. Lupe Rodriguez added 16 points, including three three-pointers for St. Margaret’s (16-3, 6-0).
