HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : North Hollywood Wins by 65

The North Hollywood Huskies enjoyed their biggest scoring night and largest victory margin of the season Wednesday in defeating Sherman Oaks CES, 112-47.

Four North Hollywood players posted double-doubles. Damon Ollie had 27 points and 21 rebounds; Arthur Lee had 16 points and 14 assists; Fantasia Johnson 14 points and 15 assists, and Terry Smith-Harris added 16 points and 14 rebounds. Twelve North Hollywood players scored, five of them reaching double figures.

The Huskies, ranked second in the Valley area by The Times, improved to 10-5, 5-0 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play.

Westlake 62, Thousand Oaks 58--Warrior guard Steve Aylsworth scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to propel Westlake to a Marmonte League comeback victory at Thousand Oaks (16-6, 7-3).

Westlake (13-5, 7-3) trailed by eight at halftime, 34-26. Jason Hartman led the Lancers with 18 points.

Bell-Jeff 65, La Salle 64--The Guards trailed, 51-39, at the end of three quarters, then Dan Mancinelli scored 14 of his 25 points in the final period. Mancinelli also had 10 rebounds.

With just under four minutes left, Anthony Couch (15 points) stole the ball and made a layup at the other end to give Bell-Jeff a 58-57 lead.

La Salle used the final 23 seconds to try for a winning shot, but a three-point attempt with one second left was an air ball. The Guards improved to 8-13, 3-4 in the Camino Real League.

Royal 36, Camarillo 35 (OT)--Scott Hambly sank a free throw with two seconds remaining in overtime for the only points of the extra period, lifting Royal to a Marmonte League victory at Camarillo. Camarillo held the ball the final three minutes of regulation, working for the final shot, but Nathan Kaup missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer.

Ventura 54, Oxnard 51--Cougar guard Ryan Studt made the winning free throws with 20 seconds left in a Channel League game at Ventura (8-11, 5-6). Studt’s two shots gave the Cougars a 52-51 lead, and after an Oxnard miss, Ventura forward John-Ryan Kern closed the scoring with two more free throws. Kern scored a game-high 15 points.

Poly 66, Canoga Park 51--Darrin Drew scored 15 points for the Parrots in a Mid-Valley League game at Poly (9-5, 4-2). Jaime Cerna added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Grant 60, South Gate 52--Ron Patterson scored 14 points and added four steals to pace the visiting Lancers (13-3) in a nonleague contest.

It was the first game for Grant since 6-foot-8 center Rick Forscutt moved to Utah with his family, and the Lancers had a difficult time adjusting to the loss, entering the locker room at halftime tied, 27-27.

Montclair Prep 66, Maranatha 53--Wes Hinkston scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth period as host Montclair Prep snapped a 42-42 tie and rolled to a nonleague victory.

Akil Anderson had 14 points and eight assists and Reed Berglund added 14 points for Montclair Prep (15-4).

Notre Dame 73, Crespi 46--Rich Igou had 13 points to lead four Notre Dame players in double figures as the host Knights (9-12, 4-6) blew open a close Mission League game in the fourth quarter. Mike Jacques had 12 points for Crespi (3-6 in league play), but teammate Gianandrea Marcaccini, the Celts’ leading scorer, was plagued by early foul trouble and was held to five points.

Providence 75, Queen of Angels 49--Senior center Scott Nelson and senior forward Ricky Flores each scored 17 points for the host Pioneers (8-8, 5-3) in a Liberty League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 64, Canoga Park 20--Anna Celaya scored 24 points and Darvena Merritt had 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the Huskies improved to 9-5, 5-0 in the Valley Pac-8 game.

Poly 87, Sherman Oaks CES 20--Junior guard Dora Lopez scored a personal high 20 points and had 20 steals and seven assists for visiting Poly in an East Valley League game. Alida Gray added 13 points and five assists for Poly (8-7, 4-2).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Granada Hills 3, El Camino Real 0--Highlander forward Angel Gomez scored twice in the Northwest Valley Conference match at El Camino Real. Phillip Waller also scored for Granada Hills (7-2-3, 3-0-2), and goalkeeper Bobby Gramacy had four saves. Gomez has scored five goals in his last two matches.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Alemany 2, St. Bernard 0--Shannon Sgro and Christina Georgio each scored for the Indians in the Mission League match at Alemany (12-5-3, 5-3-1). Stacey Brenner added an assist.

Bishop Montgomery 1, Chaminade 0--Michelle Kallas’ breakaway goal midway through the first half lifted Bishop Montgomery (7-0-1 in league play and top-ranked in the Southern Section Division II), to the Mission League victory at Chaminade. Bishop Montgomery goalkeeper Celeste Adams stopped two breakaway attempts by Shelbi Thiele in the second half.
