CLU’s Smith Gets Clearance to Play Against Occidental

Jason Smith of Cal Lutheran has been cleared to play in Saturday’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball game at Occidental.

Smith, a 6-foot-5 freshman swingman from Melbourne, Australia, was averaging 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds a game before a bone chip on his right knee forced him to sit out seven games, all of them SCIAC contests.

In other news, Cal Lutheran reserve Kenny Caesar will be back in uniform Saturday after being held out of Wednesday’s 87-73 victory over La Verne for disciplinary reasons. Caesar is averaging 3.5 points and 1.9 rebounds.

Jerry Dunlap has resigned after 19 years as athletic director at Ventura College.

Dunlap, 52, who will return to teaching physical education at the school, joined Ventura College as a part-time coach in 1967 and became a full-time staff member two years later as a wrestling and assistant football coach.

Patrick Jeffries of Crespi High, a Times’ All-Valley linebacker, has orally committed to attend St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif. Johnson (6-feet-1, 210 pounds) said he made the decision after visiting the campus in January.

Canyon High’s Susan Brondell signed a letter of intent Thursday to play volleyball for Northern Arizona. Brondell, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker, was an All-Southern Section Division III selection.
