HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Williams Gets Hot at the Finish as Oak Park Wins League Title

Oak Park’s Shawn Williams scored 16 of his game-high 35 points in the fourth quarter Friday, leading the visiting Eagles to their first-ever Tri-Valley League basketball title in a 64-50 victory over St. Bonaventure.

Oak Park, 20-2 overall and 7-0 in league play, trailed, 48-46, with just over four minutes remaining, then closed out the game with a 16-4 run.

The Eagles outscored the Seraphs, 21-10, in the decisive final period.

“This was a two-year plan, but we lost on the last game of the season last year, so we really wanted to get it this season,” said Rob Hall, in his third season as coach at Oak Park.

North Hollywood 77, Van Nuys 37--Damon Ollie scored 25 points and pulled down 21 rebounds for the host Huskies in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Arthur Lee (15 points) and Fantasia Johnson (13, 10 assists) also scored in double figures for North Hollywood (11-5, 6-0). Mike Carter led Van Nuys (2-14, 0-6) with 11 points.

Grant 76, Sherman Oaks CES 36--Ronald (18) and Donald (12) Patterson combined for 30 points as four Lancer players reached double figures. Alvin Castro scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Grant (14-3, 5-0), which remained undefeated in Valley Pac-8 play.

Cleveland 64, Kennedy 53--Jelani Janisse’s 30-point, eight rebound performance was not enough to carry the host Cougars (7-9, 2-2) past the Cavaliers in a West Valley League game.

Kennedy shot 50% (21 of 42) from the field, but also committed 26 turnovers in the game, which was played at Cleveland due to damage at the Kennedy gym incurred in the Northridge earthquake.

Jimmie Harris led Cleveland (3-1 in league play) with 14 points.

Eagle Rock 76, Verdugo Hills 53--Chan Cornish had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Verdugo Hills in a Northern Conference game at Eagle Rock.

Sylmar 77, Poly 52--Lamar Thompson had 23 points and Hector Ibbara added 22 more for the visiting Spartans in a Mid-Valley League game.

Chatsworth 80, Taft 70--Four of five starters scored in double figures to lead the host Chancellors (11-7, 3-1) to a West Valley League victory.

Eddie Miller had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Jerome Joseph added 19 points, Tariq Hill scored 16 of his 18 in the first half, and Marcel Wilson threw in 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Toreadors’ Lamont Magee led all scorers with 22 points, including five three-pointers. Ricky Steele added 20, and hauled down 13 rebounds.

Monroe 81, Birmingham 67--Kenyatta Niles had 21 points for the visiting Vikings, who scored 28 points in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Scott James and Marc Fernando each had 14 points for the Braves.

Harvard-Westlake 74, Notre Dame 60--Jarron and Jason Collins combined for 28 points as the Wolverines coasted to an easy Mission League victory over host Notre Dame. Harvard-Westlake improved to 19-2, 9-2 in league play while Notre Dame dropped to 9-13, 4-7.

Quartz Hill 52, Antelope Valley 46--Aaron Brown scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Quartz Hill (3-15, 2-11) in a Golden League game. Antelope Valley was led by Derrick Barker with a game-high 19 points.

Buena 80, Ventura 66--Robbie Knight scored 38 points--nearly half his team’s total--and John Tobias added 12 for Buena (13-9, 8-4) in a Channel League game at Ventura College. J.R. Kern (18 points) and Paul Lozano (12) led Ventura (9-13, 5-7).

Thousand Oaks 51, Royal 40--Host Royal, in an attempt to be patient on offense, took only three shots and failed to score a point in the first quarter of the Marmonte League game. Jason Hartman led Thousand Oaks (17-6, 8-3) with 24 points. Wayne Carlsen had 13 points for Royal.

Westlake 71, Channel Islands 51--Sophomore guard Steve Aylsworth scored 25 points and handed out eight assists to lead the Warriors in a Marmonte League game. Junior Billy Miller added 19 points for Westlake (15-5, 8-3). Channel Islands (4-17, 1-11) was led by Jermaine Samuels with 14 points.

Camarillo 79, Newbury Park 71 (OT)--Josh Hill scored five of his game-high 24 points in overtime for Camarillo in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park. Jim Hansen (20 points) and Kevin Nathaniel (16) also scored in double figures for the Scorpions. Ken Martin (11 points) sank a three-point shot with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Scott Ireland had a season-high 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Newbury Park (5-14, 1-10).

Glendale 55, Hoover 48--Eric Walker led all scorers with 20 points for the Tornadoes, but it was Glendale which prevailed as Tamer Iskander scored nine points and had 10 assists. Hoover was 14 of 15 from the free-throw line in the first half, but managed to score only eight points in the fourth quarter.

Crescenta Valley 82, Arcadia 57--Richard O’Neill hit nine of 11 attempts from the field, turning in a 25-point performance to lead the host Falcons (14-8, 4-4) in a Pacific League game.

Brock Jacobsen had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Blake Jacobson added 17 points and led Crescenta Valley in rebounding with 13. Jake Willis contributed 10 points and 13 assists to the victory.

Crespi 86, Alemany 63--Gianandrea Marcaccini posted a career-high 30 points for the Celtics in the Mission League game. Teammates Marc Lubaaszka and Nick Dipasquale each scored 20 points.

Santa Clara 48, Santa Paula 38-- Senior forward Damian Cantrell paced Santa Clara (14-7, 6-0) with 16 points in the Frontier League game. Manuel Escomilla scored 19 for Santa Paula.

Village Christian 42, Maranatha 38--The Crusaders (14-8, 5-1) shot 86% (19 of 22) from the free-throw line, with David Gustafson (20 points) hitting 15 of 17, nine of 11 in the final quarter. Matt Hagman had 20 points for Maranatha (14-6, 3-3).

Bell-Jeff 67, St. Genevieve 51--Senior swingman Dan Mancinelli led the Guards (9-13, 4-4) with 24 points. St. Genevieve’s Randy Iaccino scored 20.

Marlton 70, Valley Alternative 56--Mike Lyubarsky had 19 points for visiting Valley Alternative in a Magnet League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 62, Van Nuys 34--Anna Celaya scored 20 points, 18 in the second half, and 11 assists as the Huskies (10-5, 6-0) remained undefeated in the Valley Pac-8 Conference. North Hollywood allowed only 16 points in the first three periods.

Monroe 43, Birmingham 33--Dimara Haymond scored 21 points and had a career-high 26 rebounds as the Vikings won a home game that was played at Birmingham due to an earthquake-damaged gym at Monroe. Monroe limited Birmingham to only six first-half points.

Buckley 32, Windward 17--Kristine Thomas had nine points and 10 steals for visiting Buckley in a Liberty League game at Windward.

Crescenta Valley 70, Arcadia 26--Sarah Hagman had 31 points, six steals and four blocked shots, and Stephanie Labor added 12 points and 13 rebounds for host Crescenta Valley (15-7, 7-1) in a Pacific League game. Hagman sank six three-point shots, giving her 112 for the season--one shy of tying the Southern Section single-season record.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Notre Dame 3, Harvard-Westlake 2--Bri Hadfield scored the game-winning goal for the visiting Knights (6-8-2, 2-5-1) in a Mission League match. Teammate Brenna Vincent had the other two goals.

Oak Park 1, Bishop Diego 0--Laura Torres scored the match’s only goal five minutes into the second half and goalie Rheana Mantooth had four saves as the Eagles improved to 6-1 in Tri-Valley league play.

La Reina 9, Fillmore 0--Sami Conroy scored two goals to lead the attack for La Reina (18-2, 9-0), which remained undefeated in the Tri-Valley League. Michelle Nuesca added one goal to bring her to within two of the school career record and five of the CIF mark.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Harvard-Westlake 3, Notre Dame 2--Jordan Elias scored two goals for the Wolverines (14-0-4, 9-0-1), who remained undefeated overall and in Mission League play.

Calabasas 1, Nordhoff 0--Shayne Ferber took Daron Cooper’s throw-in pass and scored five minutes into the Frontier League match at Nordhoff.

The Coyotes (9-3-3, 4-1-1) bombarded Nordhoff goalie Aaron Ussery throughout the match, but Ussery stopped 25 shots.
