ROUNDUP : CLU Rallies for 91-84 Overtime Win

The Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team overcame a 19-point second-half deficit to beat Occidental, 91-84, in overtime in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Occidental.

Paul Tapp, who scored 24 points, all after halftime, made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Derrick Clark also scored 24 for the Kingsmen (18-1 overall, 7-1).

Blair Slattery led Occidental (10-8, 4-4) with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Ventura 39, Buena 37--Amber Brown hit two free throws with a minute to play, giving the Cougars an upset in a Channel League game.

Buena (18-2, 11-1), ranked fourth in the state, had won 15 consecutive games. Sara Phelps missed a short jump shot that would have tied it with two seconds to play.

Kristin Franklin scored 14 to lead Ventura (16-5, 11-2).

Notre Dame 49, Chaminade 39--Valery Brady became the Knights’ all-time leading scorer with seven points in a Mission League game, giving her 666 for her career. Notre Dame (13-8, 6-4) set a school record for victories in a season. Maggie Dixon scored eight points and grabbed 19 rebounds for Notre Dame.

Burroughs 67, Canyon 18--Gina Punaro scored a game-high 18 points for the Indians (16-4, 6-2) in a Foothill League game. Suzy Babko added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Laura Tweedy of Canyon scored 11 of her team’s 18 points.

Newbury Park 55, Royal 46--Jann Thorpe scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven steals to lead the host Panthers (19-4, 10-2) in a Marmonte League game. Kara McEwen had 14 points, six steals and 10 rebounds. Tawnee Cooper scored 19 points for Royal (6-5 in league play).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Canyon 86, Burroughs 39--Greg Minor scored 25 points and Charles Woodard added 18 to lead the Cowboys (18-5, 6-1) to an easy Foothill League victory at Canyon. Canyon led, 31-7, after the first quarter. Burroughs completed its league schedule with a 1-7 record.

St. Francis 62, Pius X 56--Braden Weber scored 12 of his 17 points in the third quarter as the host Golden Knights (18-5, 9-1), winners of 14 of their last 15 games, overcame a three-point halftime deficit and rallied to win the Del Rey League game.

Royal 77, Newbury Park 52--The Highlanders scored a school-record 33 points in the fourth quarter to clinch a Marmonte League victory. Eric Carlsen led Royal (7-14, 4-6 in league play) with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 4, Canyon 0--Roberto Perez scored two goals to lead the Indians (10-6-2, 6-1-1) to a road victory that clinched their third consecutive Foothill League championship. Marc Binda made five saves for Burroughs.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

CS Northridge 82, Cal Poly SLO 66--Michelle Esparaza scored 25 points and took down 10 rebounds to lead the Matadors, who won for the first time since the earthquake. Five Matadors scored in double figures, Shannon Crouse had 13 points, while Katina Mines, Carrie Dormine and Mary Jean Espino added 10 each for Northridge (3-19).
